Herschel Matthews was the owner………….I used to sell him mesquite wood for his BBQ.I have a matchbook from there, it’s black sateen (?) with Herschell’s image in gold, at the top is ‘Big Niggers’, and under his image it reads ‘Herschell Mattews-H.N.I.C. (Head n—— in charge). Good guy, very unusual time.

You are right, good food, fun place to eat I went there many times as a teenager. The big guy was the manager (great marketer!) who ran the place but the restaurant was actually owned by a small guy named Herschel. Southeast Corner of Cooper and Mitchell. I remember Herschel had a heart attack and the restaurant was shut down within days of his death. I have a photo of it somewhere, but good gosh in these days I would never upload it anywhere. As a matter of fact now that I think about it I probably shouldn’t even admit I knew about the place.

I ate there a few times with my Uncle Vance who was friends with the owner. It was called the “Big Nigger” because that was according to the owner, That is what they call me!” as he was laughing a big deep laugh. The food and service was as good as I ever had anywhere.

Concerning the Big N– Barbecue in Arlington in 1973. It was at the corner of Mitchel and Cooper – now a parking lot. In regards to a photo – I believe there was an interview with the owner in the September or October 1973 UTA Newspaper. I think I remeber seeing a photo with the article.

Thank you. I couldn’t believe my eyes, the first time I saw the restaurant. I’m not sure, but I think that it was on South Cooper, a few blocks south of UTA. Are you aware of an internet site with a photo I can share with my dubious friends and relatives?

I too remember Big Nigger’s Barbque( Good food, good prices) but I thought it was the radical young blacks that forced him out.
I had heard that he told someone they could change the name when they bought it.
