…and “Starship Titanic,” too. But unrelated to that, I was over at the Nerdworld site, and read this http://nerdworld.blogs.time.com/2009/07/12/a-real-american-hero/ and it had me laughing pretty hard. Of course I’ve always been unreasonably fond of GI Joe.
Getting back to MST3K, I think the time is right for MST3K:TNG – same robots, different human. Thoughts?
Hey Repub… I got your comment out of the spam filter… Not sure why it got caught up despite all the dirty words and porn links you put in your comment.
I’m sorry. You can call me a grumpy old fart if you want, but I never liked MST3K. To me all the shadowed figures and inane chatter was just in the way of the enjoyment of watching some of Hollywoods cheesiest sci-fi movies.
Barbara Boxer said that if we do no pass Cap-and-trade, we will have droughts, floods, fires, loss of species, damage to agriculture, worsening air pollution, fire and brimstone coming down from the skies, Rivers and seas boiling, forty years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanoes, the dead rising from the grave, human sacrifices, dogs and cats living together . . . Mass Hysteria!
MST3k isn’t really for everyone. I don’t take umbrage when people don’t like it, but then most of the show’s appeal for me was that they seemed to be making jokes that were intended specifically for me, personally, you know? Things that only thirty people in the country and I would get, and then only because we’re insomniacs reading weird books. They weren’t broad-appeal Johnny Carson gags.
Their take on the movie Pumaman is totally priceless, Donald Pleasance as the villain and Final Justice, an old Joe Don Baker film where he plays a Texas Ranger in Malta…hilarious!
I’ve never seen MST, but when I was in grammar school I would do the same thing with a group of friends. We’d watch, bad, old movies on Sunday afternoons and make up our own scripts. A few of the guys were still on the couch, doing the same thing when I went off to College. I guess they missed their shot at fame and glory. But that probably would have required getting off the couch at some point.
I don’t usually like to give props to pedophiles who marry their own daughters, but has anyone ever seen “What’s Up Tiger Lily?” Woody Allen did the same thing with a Japanese spy film from the 60’s. It’s very funny, if you can ignore the fact that you’re watching a movie made by a man who would later go on to marry his long-time girlfriend’s daughter.
I had day one of my Diversity class today, and among the handouts, there’s one on how many hate crimes were committed against muslims or Arab-Americans following 9-11, including murder. Does anyone know of this? I’ve heard of many conservatives covering that none of this happened, but I’d hate to take issue with it in this class and be proved wrong.
Here are the stats from 2001…. 546 offenses reported to police according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports. Probably a bit low given the realities of reporting of crimes to police, but 546 relative to the Arabic/Muslim population is miniscule in the extreme.
In other words there was a statistically “significant” jump in anti-Muslim hate crimes. I think it tripled from 150 to over 500 total crimes. Big whoop. It was still half the crimes against Jews or gays.
Well there are many legal arguments, I’ve heard and read various people claiming it violates the 1st, 10th and 14th amendments… or some combination thereof. The essence of the claim is that hate crime legislation in effect gives the government the power to declare one person’s worth is greater than another. You could say the Civil War was fought to eliminate this and about one hundred and fifty years later everyone seems to have forgotten about it.
For instance, assmuing all other factors are equal, a white man murders a white man and another white man murders a black man. The first gets 25 years and the second gets 25 years plus another 10 (or whatever extra punishment the law entitles) for the hate crime for 35 years. The court just determined that the black victim is more more important than the white victim.
Alright, but if a black man murders a black man he won’t get the extra time right? Most certainly not, but what about a black man murdering a white man? Does he get a hate crime charge? This type of legislation forces courts to make value judgements on the individuals based on racial, sexual or ethnic background. This blows the whole concept of equal protection under the law right off the face of the Earth.
Yes. I had forgotten to mention this too. A lot of this legislation could be interpreted as declaring simple dissenting speech as a hate crime and therefore be used to imprision someone. The defense is usually, ‘Well the legal system takes into consideration the circumstances’. Oh yeah, no government in the history of the world has ever abused that power, right?
Suppose that I hate Muslims, and see one on the sidewalk.I walk up to him and gun him down. For what should I be punished?Killing a man…my hatred is legally irrelevant.
“Hate” is a legitimate basis for enhancing penalties… I’d lock up a Klansman who torches a Black church a lot longer than your typical arsonist and I’d lock up Black punks who attack a white family on the 4th of July for a decade or more — a lot more than a typical assault. But I would only allow a judge/jury to consider it in the sentencing phase when motives, etc. are better argued (so guilt or non-guilt) can be dealt with in a more objective fashion at the trial). Liberals don’t want it that way.
Forgive me for plugging my own site, but we put up this essay today that I think is kind of interesting, and might jumpstart some discussions here. It’s a bit too long for me to cut-and-paste over to Thredonia, though.
Mystery Science Theatre 3000, LOVE THAT SHOW!!!
They have a new thing called rifftrax, now!

Grumpy old fart.
Yung whippersnapper! (note the spelling)
Go easy on him. He didn’t get his prunes today.
David, you don’t know me. That is one problem I don’t have!
It’s just none of the other ones I want to imagine…
I second Floyd,
Grumpy Old Fart.
I will do the rest of my statement in the form of a 15 year old girl:
Like, you are like old and like mean and like like like out of like date like like milk.
Ah. I can feel the love, or is that bile welling up in my throat?
Mike will be on here soon, defending his adoptive dad. He’ll be on you all like stink on a skunk.
Old people probably don’t get all the cultural references. Maybe you should try turning it up louder
Did ya miss me??
Are you calling me old now too? And yes, we did miss you. And I do get all the cultural refs. I just don’t like the show or the format.
Rifftrax.com, Republibot.
For the record, I love MST3K.
I think that settles the matter.

I loathe Barbara Boxer.

R3.0 are you calling me narrow?
Their take on the movie Pumaman is totally priceless, Donald Pleasance as the villain and Final Justice, an old Joe Don Baker film where he plays a Texas Ranger in Malta…hilarious!
How about a list of reforms one would attempt if you were elected President.
Love MST and rifftrax. We are in the process of indoctrinating the children.

@ Fritz – Of course I’m not calling you narrow. I don’t even have any idea how tall you are, let alone how wide…just saying it’s an aquired taste.
Or, as a friend of mine is fond of saying “The show is for people who like heckling movies, but are too stupid or lazy to do it themselves.”
I had day one of my Diversity class today, and among the handouts, there’s one on how many hate crimes were committed against muslims or Arab-Americans following 9-11, including murder. Matt, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. The left usually manufactures stats on everything so no matter your argument, you’ll be wrong anyway.
Matt here are the Hate Crime stats from the FBI from 2002 170 offenses known to police in 2002.

Where’s Mikey? MIA for 24 hours.
Hiking the Appalachian Trail maybe,Fritz
Either that or he saw the movie “A Haunting in Connecticut” and thought they were out to get him, and is in hiding.
Matt, just say that hate crime legislation is blatantly unconstitutional
How?
Well there are many legal arguments, I’ve heard and read various people claiming it violates the 1st, 10th and 14th amendments… or some combination thereof. The essence of the claim is that hate crime legislation in effect gives the government the power to declare one person’s worth is greater than another. You could say the Civil War was fought to eliminate this and about one hundred and fifty years later everyone seems to have forgotten about it.

Hate is speech, and therefore protected by the 1st Amendment

Since we don’t have a Tuesday (Seriously, we need one), I will post this here.
I kust finished watching HAROLD & MAUDE, and for a hippie, marijuana, no-morals film, it was quite good. (Especially the Cat Stevens music).
JUST finished.
It’s not bad. Guys with Porsche Hearses always get the chicks…
Even the 80 year old chicks!
Yeah. She wasn’t really *my* kind of octagenarian – I’m more of a Jessica Tandy kind of guy – but hey, if that’s what he goes for, good for him.
So what, are we not doing daily open-threads anymore?
