Didn’t catch Sonia Sotomayor’s joke of a hearing, I was busy inflicting myself with a lifelong illness of carpal tunnel (see post below). But others did, and they weren’t too terribly impressed. First, the Instapundit himself, Glenn Reynolds has criticism from various sources and then drops this line after Randy Barnett’s review of her grilling by Orrin Hatch:
If her politics were different, this would be clear evidence that she is unfit.
Ed Whelan and dealin’ has this review from Mike Seidman, a decidedly liberal law professor from Georgetown:
I was completely disgusted by Judge Sotomayor’s testimony today. If she was not perjuring herself, she is intellectually unqualified to be on the Supreme Court. If she was perjuring herself, she is morally unqualified. How could someone who has been on the bench for seventeen years possibly believe that judging in hard cases involves no more than applying the law to the facts? …
Perhaps Justice Sotomayor should be excused because our official ideology about judging is so degraded that she would sacrifice a position on the Supreme Court if she told the truth. Legal academics who defend what she did today have no such excuse. They should be ashamed of themselves.
The few bits I’ve read, the consensus is Sotomayor is sandbagging, doing everything possible not to say anything remotely controversial since her place on the Court is all but secure thanks to the Democratic stranglehold. I have very little understanding of the law, but if she is underwhelming to this extent while attempting to breeze through, just how outrageous would things be if she was whipping out invective like she did in the Ricci case. Thank God she’s replacing Souter.
Lindsay Graham drilled her earlier today over the wise Latina comment and laid it only especially thick, even for Graham.

This mediocrity is proving herself worthy of being the Roman Hruska Memorial Nominee. And we’re gonna be stuck with her until the 2030s…
I watched a bit today and found myself thinking, as she hemmed and hawed alot, similar to the way Geitner did when being asked pointed questions some months back on the economy; “This woman’s gonna help our country crash and burn!” I felt the same things expressed above. She’s either a really big liar, or totally incompetent. The answer to that one really doesn’t matter, since either way, it’s gonna get ugly.
She’s either a really big liar, or totally incompetent.
A little of column A and a little of column B.
Here’s the thing: even with the soft-balling, she isn’t doing particularly well and the scent is starting to waft. The public stands at 47% for her confirmation and she’s even getting criticism from Dems. With everything else the Blue Dogs are sweating over, she may not get enough votes. Granted, that’s a slim hope, but her current behavior is what’s creating it. Harriet Miers, part 2?
All I could think of is, is this the best these jackasses can do? Her? Where is Miguel Estrada…oh I forgot he is a Republican Latino…an Uncle Juan…
David, the Blue Dogs are a pack of phonies in the House..talk conservative, vote liberal
We have them in West Tennessee and North Mississippi
David, the Blue Dogs are a pack of phonies in the House..talk conservative, vote liberal
Which is why over forty of them voted against Cap-n-Trade…
I’m not saying the Blue Dogs can be relied on to be some type of conservative vanguard on their side of the aisle (especially since they’re being cowed by the party leadership), but the hard Lefties are pushing their luck more and more.
Bah, growing up in upstate NY it was full of Blue Dog Democrats. They are just as Scott says, talk conservative, vote liberal. Democrats like to keep the seats, so what they simply do is calculate how many Blue Dogs can vote against a liberal proposal but still have it pass. Democrats get their legislation and the Blue Dogs can lie to their constituents about standing up for their conservative principles.
Why is the dog Blue? He gots no balls.
I didn’t see much of the hearings I had a class all morning and then the beach. Sucks to be in SoCal in the summer!
@John… The Ricci case is even worse. She basically dismissed the case (at the 2d Circuit) and hid behind a one or two paragraph “per curiam” (unsigned opinion — which normally doesn’t get passed around to all the judges) opinion. IN other words — “suck it dyslexic white boy”. To paraphrase Gunnery Sgt. Hartman — she didn’t even have the common courtesy to give Ricci a good reach around. Another judge saw the case mentioned in the New Haven newspaper — hadn’t heard of it — found it and moved for a rehearing and then wrote a blistering dissent.

I’ll just about bet that one tidbit will never hit the MSM.
Sotomayor is as subjective as they come and is pretending to be objective for the Senate; but the act is obvious and she’s probably not capable of being objective; that would take real wisdom.
Well considering her high school pictures are photos of poor persecuted me, with this look of anger I can’t imagine someone growing up feeling they are owed like she must feel being subjective. I am still trying to friggen figure just what white people would owe her but am not having any luck. She looks like a pure psychopath and her Ricci ruling proves it.
Just another goofy choice by obama.
If you read Maureen Dowd (and why would you), Sotomayor is a stalwart, upright beacon of light against the decrepit Republicans engaging in their standard minority H8. W00t.
Skip… as much as I love Threedonia and its denizens — I refuse to read Mo Dowd. There I said — my love is conditional. I’m ashamed.
And despite all her erudition and condescension, she still can’t figure out why no decent man wants anything to do with New York’s paragon of emasculation.
Tell you what Floyd, I’ll read her for you as long as Threedonia pays for the Steel Wool I need to scrub off the dirt I feel covers me afterwards.
