Gary Ross, director and writer behind Pleasantville and Seabiscuit, is now on board to re-write the script for Spider-Man 4.
According to Variety, Gary Ross has been hired to pen a new draft of “Spider-Man 4,” the next installment in the franchise. The deal reunites Ross with series lead Tobey Maguire, who he directed previously in “Seabiscuit.”
Sam Raimi is slated to direct. Filming is expected to start in 2010 with the sequel arriving in theaters in May 2011.
The MTV article laments Ross’ re-write as evidence that an announcement of the villains is far away. I would be more concerned about the quality of the script than the villainy – that comes hand-in-hand. Given the formula “too many villains is not a good thing,” Raimi, Ross and Sony should keep that in mind, especially after the convoluted Spider-Man 3. It’s a lesson Jon Favreau may be learning the hard way with Iron Man 2, which is loading up Hollywood bodies like free coke night at the Viper Room.
Ross and Tobey Maguire worked together on both Pleasantville and Seabiscuit. Ross is just the latest writer attached to the film, the first being James Vanderbilt, who was tagged shortly after Spider-Man 3 was released and landed as a critical dud.

I think in this installment, they should play him more like the Electric Company Spider-Man.
Venom and the black suit were totally wasted. If I didn’t like Evil Dead so much I’d never forgive Sam Raimi.
They should cast Emo Phillips as one of the villains so he Peter Parker could fight to see who is the most depressing.
It didn’t help that a lot of requirements were placed by the studio on Raimi and he didn’t have full control.
I blame S-M 3 on Ivan Raimi. As long as Ivan is kept as far away from the project as possible, then this might be worth the ticket.
