Perhaps it’s just becuase I grew up in the wrong generation, and I’m not getting the same signals that the oldsters do, but I never got the fascination with the Kennedys. Yeah, JFK was energetic and charming, and Bobby could feign “Concerned moral indignation” on command, but seriously, why are so many people so completely obsessed with them? Why are they considered the AMerican equivalent of Royalty, particularly when only one of ‘em got the presidency? And for that matter, isn’t the concept of Royalty – even an honorary cult-of-personality-based form – exactly what we as a nation were trying to get away from?
Bot I don’t get it either. When I was in high school for like 3 months I was fascinated and then my Dad put his foot down. I think there is a mythological issue in place. THe Camelot lie if you will. Jackie had much to do with this. Something I never understood about her after the crap that Jack put her through she stood up for his worthless hide. She could have stayed silent. I know I would have. And the fact that no one with any real facts has ever had the courage to come out and deconstruct them. What they are hate to say it to, is white trash posing as patricians. They came from low class peasent stock like the rest of us, their wealth built on an empire of criminality and lies. But the 60’s itself was a lie. As much so called good that happened much bad also happened. Sure Jack championed civil rights. The cynic in me says he knew he needed the black votes. RFK was as big a pig as his brother was to. But I don’t get the issues of holding the lie so close. Democrats would rather slit their own wrists than admit that their first family defines corruption of morals and ethics. There is a book called A Question of Character, a Life of John F. Kennedy. If you want to read a good book about the truth of that bottom feeding red neck read that.

To most Liberals I know, every Kennedy except sick old Ted is a footnote in history, or a source of conspiracy theories. Get over them.

On the subject of Getting Over It….
‘Bot, it all goes back to the Kennedy assassination. JFK was so stylish and cool, “everybody” loved him. And then he was killed. And ever since that day, the Left has been able to tell itself, “It would have been different if he’d lived. It all would have been better if ‘Camelot’ hadn’t been destroyed.”
The Kennedy the Left idolizes isn’t the one who actually lived; the guy who hated Communism and increased defense spending and lowered taxes and got us into Vietnam, and was killed by a Communist. He’s a shimmering vision of lost purity, who can be re-shaped into any form they like. He’s a plastic Jesus, and they miss him so very much.
The other interesting thing about the Kennedys is the amount of untimely deaths in that family. It’s as if the devil came to collect the souls Joe promised him years ago.
The whole “Camelot” scenario reads like a script from the Sopranos. Dirty “old money,” “Pussy” got whacked, Tony’s running around wanting his “shrink,” the kids are total train wrecks, Junior ain’t senile enough yet to keep from trying to get Tony whacked, Carmella’s hot(and HOT!), but not so hot she can’t try to keep the mystique together, etc., etc. Oh, yeah, and there’s the mob.
Matt I wouldn’t doubt you’re right to. Old Joe was a real prize..just ask Sam Giancana.
I’m writing a book (fiction) right now that touches upon the whole Kennedy/Giancana thing with communist spies in the mix. People think that Sinatra got the mob involved with that election, and that’s partially right, but old Joe was already dealing with these guys years before, and called in a favor for the union support. Sinatra (and the Rat Pack by association) was just given the offer no one could refuse. Giancana even wanted to bump him off at one point.
Darth even in your silly last post you fail to understand. Use the grey matter between your ears and have a decent argument. Even the screen name is a little insulting. We are supposed to take you seriously? Please. Just have a good talking points memo and run with it. Don’t just show up in a place and start insulting people right and left. You will lose the fight every time.
I liked JFK and RFK. That’s about it, but then the only real information I got was from the news. So it was faulty. Ted is the only one that still is around, and he’s as goofy as Harry Reid.

You mean like the way the Dems have “gotten over” the Hoover presidency, the McCarthy hearings, Goldwater’s vote on the Civil Rights Act and so many other so-called sins of the Republicans? The Dems and the Left are always bringing up past sins, real or imagined, of their opponents, so spare us the lectures about “getting over it”.
Then again, the Dems seem to easily have “gotten over” their history of slavery, secession, subversion, segregation, soft socialism, eugenics and union thuggery, so of course they can easily “get over” one of their own killing someone and never paying any personal price.
Is there a statute of limitations on disgusting political acts? If not, we can just take turns accusing each other of genociding the indians until we’re BOTH sick of it.
St. Sarcasm, I wasn’t specifically talking about liberals. I know lots of middle-of-the-road people and conservatives that are just as obsessed of them in one way or another. I guess I just don’t get the appeal, myself. Objectively he seems to have been a rather ineffective parent, and why people would choose to obsess over him rather than, I dunno, pick another president really – James K. Polk or Jefferson, let’s say – is the thing I don’t get.
Oh, good. Something I can actually agree with here with a clear conscience.
But then, I’ve never gotten political hero-worship at all, except as an atavistic kowtowing towards our Betters. I spent most of Bush’s term wondering if someone had dosed the nation’s water supply.

This doesn’t make sense. They want to do things differently than Bush, but the plan appears to be merely changing names. Except waterboarding. They won’t do that. They don’t know what they’ll do. though. Why bother to announce anything? What a bunch of idiots. Their mantra is still just anti-Bush.
Well, the focus has changed from “extracting false confessions” to “get useful info”, so waterboarding just isn’t useful anymore.

What’s on the menu tonight people? Matt’s got some baby back ribs with his infamous homemade barbecue sauce (which I might hint at the recipe if anyone should ask), asparagus wrapped in bacon, and fingerling potatoes sautéed in butter.
Sushi, grilled Italian sausage and home-grown salad. It’s 100 degrees. I didn’t want to cook too much. The ribs sound good, though.
Not a sushi fan. I don’t want to eat anything that comes with a warning from the health dpt (I have a culinary degree and have been scared off touching the stuff). The sausage sounds great. I wasted money on a charcoal Weber unit, but the wind down here in FL, pretty much renders it useless. I’m going to have to go with a gas grill.
I’ve learned how to make sushi. I guess it’s more California roll, since I don’t use raw stuff other than vegetables. I’m learning to cook now that I retired. I’m having a blast with it. I have a gas grill and a gas wok. We have a lot of wind where I live as well. I’ll have to build an outdoor cooking area that has 6 foot walls, but I can cook almost year-round outside. A friend of mine bought a pellet cooker. I’ve had some steaks and chicken cooked on it. If I didn’t already have the gas unit, I’d be tempted to buy one.
GMAN your making me hungry. I have been hankering for Sushi all day. YUMMY! They do make cooked sushi Matt. The shrimp and egg and the veggie isn’t bad. I like the Tuna and Salmon…and the spicy shrimp tempura hand rolls. SIghhhhhh also any crab sushi is also cooked.
I alternate between sushi and fresh spring rolls. I’ve been finding some good salmon lately. It’s funny that the 35 years I spent in Alaska, I only occasionally ate salmon. I’ve eaten more salmon in the past couple years than in the last 35. What was I thinkin’?
I can shove some sushi down my throat, unless it’s urchin, or one of the more disgusting crap. But I’m a meat and potatoes guy, and love game on the plate. We’ve a lot of rabbits in our yards here, so I’m always hunkering for a nice braised rabbit dinner. The seafood ain’t so hot in FL. And getting good steamers is a joke. Grouper is the generic version of Cod, with half the taste.
Jesus. Was just watching this on TV and I don’t know how you can explain it. Even if it’s a trained trick, it’s amazing within itself. I guess if an elephant can fly, it can paint. But this is no Dumbo.

Anchorage had an elephant that painted (Annabelle) but it was more abstract stuff. This elephant can draw better than I can.
Had Urchin at Cafe’ Asia with a submariner who was stationed at the Pentagon before I met my hubby. I didn’t like it so much. Also had scallop. In retrospect that was food poisoning waiting to happen.

I went to Japan a few years ago. I ate all kinds of stuff I’ve never seen before. It’s interesting going to different cultures. The hardest for me was eating some of the Eskimoe foods. That seal oil is pretty potent. So is the Muktuk.

Not sure Kit. I found out today that Dina Titus junior rep. from NV is on the House healthcare committee. She always disagrees with my take, but she voted against the healthcare plan in committee. I think she’s trying to save her chances for re-election in 2010.

Here is a question put forth to the ether: Why when challenged do leftists, see above examples, change teh subject rather than use a well fashioned argument? Its like say it, its emotionally charged (for the immature idiots) and then go onto the next one. Like the stupid line about waterboarding. Now I could counter that by saying, ok maybe they shouldn’t have waterboarded anyone, would see LA glow in the dark and millions dead or at least hundreds of thousands be better?
