Class Act

This is a clip from a Finnish documentary on bias in the classroom in American Presidentail elections.  I learned two things watching this video; some teachers let their bias spill into their teaching and I can understand a lot of Finnish, at least written Finnish.  I speak, read and write German and I could follow the subtitles fairly well.  Don’t worry though, the audio is in English.

My guess is the teacher is against vouchers…

  • Actually the language they’re speaking is Swedish, which is related to German. Genuine Finnish is an unrelated (Finno-Ugric) language. Both are spoken in Finland.

Brainwash 101. This teacher should get the axe (in the head). On Friday, one of my students came to me with a drawing of myself and Obama. I told him it was a nice drawing, and didn’t become unhinged that I shared space in a child’s drawing with someone I view as harmful to this country, and voted against. You just don’t go into opinions with kids.

  • My Uncle is always trying to get me to learn Finnish. Really is an interesting language, and like Lars mentioned, unrelated to any of the other European roots.

Finnish is a linguists playground from what I understand.

    Lars,

Thank you for pointing out my error. I didn’t know Swedish was the dominant language in Finland. I was surprised so many of the words were German cognates! Now I know why.

    Kiitos!

Take your uncle up on the offer. You won’t regret it. Speaking a foreign language and playing an instrument are two of the best brain exercises I know. It’s like calisthenics for your brain!

  • Rufus,

Hey, thanks for linking to my blog! Yeah, that teacher reminded me of all of the things that sucked about being stuck in school as a kid.

BTW, I love the blog! I just subscribed to your RSS. :-)

BelchSpeak… as a practitioner of that fine art (to my wife’s horror and my kids’ undying amusement) — I love that name.
