As usual, Pornaznik nailed the last installment. If you ask me, it’s crap of bull, but what can I do?
The tune was, in fact, “The Coffee Song,” and my favorite version is by The Chairman of the Board, Francis Albert. I’ve heard three versions by him, but there are many, and they differ. My favorite is included on “The Essential Frank Sinatra, The Columbia Years.” It’s swings slowly and has a Brazilian feel. The version on “The Rat Pack – The Stars that Made Las Vegas” isn’t bad, but the quality on the vocals is a little rough. “Ring a Ding Ding” is up-tempo. If you want something a little more kitschy, check that one out. Regardless, I encourage you to add this song to your collection. I simply can’t imagine anyone not liking it. Great lyrics, great melody. Adults like it. Kids like it. A great tune!
Way down among Brazilians coffee beans grow by the billions, so they’ve got to find the cups enough to fill.
They’ve got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil.
You can’t find cherry soda ’cause they’ve got to meet that quota, and they way things are I guess they never will.
They’ve got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil.
No tea. No tomato juice. You’ll see, no potato juice. For the planters down in Santos all say, “No, no, no.”
A politician’s daughter was accused of drinkin’ water, and was fined a great big Fifty dollar bill,
They’ve got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil!
For today’s entry I need a title and composer (the composer is also the artist). As always, no internet research.
“m I gettin’ tan, or am I gettin’ freckles?”
(my money’s on Father Ron for this one…)
The only coffee song I know is by a semi-childrens group called “Trout Fishing In America”
All I want is a proper cup of coffee
made in a proper copper coffee pot
I may be off my dot
but I want some proper coffee in a proper copper pot.
Fine humor.
I like “Trout Fishing in America’s” A-B-C song.
Tracy,
I imagine the eminently, musically gifted Dr. Zoon knows “The Coffee Song.” Ask him if he doesn’t agree that it would be fun for the whole family. It’s a whopping $0.99 on ITunes!
Stealing my tag-line (Barney Stinson says, “It’s out there!”) on the same day I’m stumped. You must be running around covered in pig grease with excitement today, Rufus! Sincerely, enjoy it.
Dong Work For Yuda? Only song I know that mentions Freckles.
God bless ya for always having the Zappa references handy, TR!
I like the Ring a Ding Ding version for the line “they got a gang of coffee …” I’m a sucker for the Rat Pack lingo.
I was going to say Pigtails and Freckles by Irving Berlin, he’s been known to sing his own songs, but that’s not it.
Eric,
Yes, I am running around in pig grease today, but that’s simply because it’s Wednesday. On Fridays I coat myself in honey.
O.K., time for a hint. That first “word” in the snippet I provided is not a typo.
The line that follows the one I provided is:
“I hope it’s tan ’cause I’m sure spendin’ sheckles.”
“To sit beside my ocean view, with my coffee pot,”
“The only fish around is Novia Scotia lox.”
The artist got his start as an actual artist, he has a Masters in Fine Arts in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design.
He has opened for Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.
(Did you hear, that T.R.?)
He has toured the country as a comedian.
He has acted in at least 10, rather major films.
He’s been a star or featured performer on at least 3 different television programs, and has done lots of commercial work.
Still clueless, Rufus, however you have won the maximum ‘peat ‘o the year award with a 45 ‘peat!
Rufus, as a last resort I googled this, not to win, but just so that I could finally personally place it before I go crazy, and the lyrics aren’t even googleable. Which drives me more crazy!!!
To steal from Rufus, is crap of bull, Matt. He’s busy editing the Wilipedia entry if this mystery artist as we type.
Yeah, I found that out myself yesterday after I posted it. I don’t even think the album was ever released on CD. Or, albums, I should say. It’s been on at least three. Does it help if I tell you his comedy tour featured him, on a couch, and he primarily played on College campuses? Oh, his initials are redundant and the first two words in my first snippet of lyrics are in the song’s title.
I featured another song by this artist in my Yule Tunes series.
He plays guitar, yukelele and banjo, but guitar is his main instrument.
The leader of the house band on one of his TV shows penned the Brady Bunch theme.
Eric,
I always thought the guy who wrote this song was a native of the Buckeye state, but I just learned he was born in Chicago and went to High School in Massachusetts. It seems to me he typically refers to himself as an Ohio boy, though.
I need to mull this one over a while. Old Dr. Demento song but I don’t recall the title.
Mull as long as you wish, but I predict you’ll be smartin’ when you learn the truth.
“Spell _ _ _ _ _ and then, ask me why, _ _, oh, _ _ _ m I in heaven, oh, Man, I can’t believe it. The fun I’ve had, and I’m gon’na have to leave it…”
A wild wild stab … George Gobel.
He speaks in riddles, but I think Tony’s on to something here.
I’m thinking of a different song but I think I have the right guy.
George Gobel. You wish while I whittle, you drip while I dry. Lets all try to help a little cause even a miracle needs a hand
“You hope and I’ll hurry, you pray and I’ll plan, we’ll do what’s necessary, cause, even a miracle neeeeeeeds a hand!” That’s an extra on the Rankin/Bass Frosty’s Winter Wonderland DVD. Gobel and Joel Grey. I pine for it every Christmas. I think Tony would win if he had some M&Ms.
I’d rather have some mulled wine and watch a good old Quinn Martin caper.
I had some mulled wine before at a place called Martinis. Nick the bartender was given out wings.
This charade is falling on deaf ears. Martin Mull. As for the song title, who the hell cares at this point.
Best laugh I’ve had all day, Tony!
The song is “Miami.”
Miami, good grief!
