Nobody Gets Out Of Here Alive

Speaking of under-rated and great front men…David Grohl of the Foo Fighters falls into those catagories.

  • Much like Oz and the Tin Man, Curt Cobain never did much for this rock fan. Talented? Perhaps, but Grohl’s proven in spades in the time since starting the Foo Fighters that he’s much more so. Of course, I always preferred McCartney’s pop sensibilities to Lennon’s artsy-fartsy “genius.”

  • You think Grohl’s underrated? I don’t think so. Everyone I know – and I know a HELL of a lot of people – loves him, and thinks he’s brilliant. Most of my friends have at least one Foo Fighters CD, most have a lot more. Honestly, he’s on nearly every musician I know’s “Short list” of people who really matter in music. Everyone raves about him. *I* rave about him, and I hate damn near everybody.

I think maybe since Grohl tends to avoid hype, there’s an assumption that he’s not a heavy hitter, but the man/band don’t really nead hype, and they’re all kinds of huge.

Cobain was good at what he did, but basically he was a 1970s-style california singer/songwriter dude trapped in the body of an early 90s cascadia bisexual. His songs are essentially dissonant and of course electric, but they’re really not all that different in subject matter that that crap that was on the radio when the Eagles were huge. A lot bleaker, he put his own spin on it, but there it is. So he didn’t really work for me. In fact, towards the end, it wasn’t really working for him, which is why he added the 2nd guitarist at the end there, to change it up a bit, add more variation and texture.

    • I meant he was underrated by the public at large. I am not privy to music insider info to who’s a power player in the industry or anything like that.

I think Mr. Grohl and the Foo Fighters consistantly produce music that is head and shoulders above what is more “popular”…and because of that I would say they and he are under-appreciated.

Foo Fighters – even better live, even in some dirt trap in the Midwest, he gave the most energetic performance I’ve ever seen.

  • I always liked the Foo Fighters version of Gerry Rafferty’s ‘Baker Street’…

Could have cared less at the time about Cobain (although have found some respect a decade later), but have loved Grohl from day one. Great rock band that puts on a great rock show. No B.S.

I’m not sure if this backs up Outlaw’s claim, but I’d never heard of the guy until this post.

  • I’m not an insider either, I’m just saying that among my spooky little friends and in my band and stuff like that, Grohl gets talked about a *lot*, vastly more than people who are ostensibly more popular. Grohl is one of the people who’s in it for the long haul, not a flash-in-the-pan rapper or slutrock chick.
