I remember reading Herbert Asbury’s The Gangs of New York and trying to picture a Manhattan of swamps, meadows, etc. even in the 1840s. In any case the Project is an interesting tool.

I could not put down The Gangs of New York. (The movie is set in that time and place, and features some of the gangs, but it’s nothing like the book.)
I could not believe the brutality—the Crips and Bloods had nothing on the Dead Rabbits and the Bowery Boys. (I’d always get a jolt when the Bowery Boys did something awful—how could you, Satch?)
