The Mannahatta Project

Ground Zero 1609
Ground Zero circa 1609 — as imagined by The Mannahatta Project….an interactive map of Manhattan Island as it probably looked in 1609. You can search by landmark or street address…

I remember reading Herbert Asbury’s The Gangs of New York and trying to picture a Manhattan of swamps, meadows, etc. even in the 1840s. In any case the Project is an interesting tool.

Was looking at that in National Geograpic,Floyd…very interesting

  • I could not put down The Gangs of New York. (The movie is set in that time and place, and features some of the gangs, but it’s nothing like the book.)

I could not believe the brutality—the Crips and Bloods had nothing on the Dead Rabbits and the Bowery Boys. (I’d always get a jolt when the Bowery Boys did something awful—how could you, Satch?)
