The Japanese are a xenophobic and incredibly homogenous culture. They appear to be friendly and accommodating and non-concerned about other races and nationalities because there is no real, current threat to their culture. When 99.9% of your culture is of the same heritage, and so was your parents' and their parents' and their parents... Everybody is one big, happy family, but most Japanese would not welcome other nationalities and cultures owning and controlling parts of their nation. American businessmen are fine. They bring money to Japan. Americans buying up Japanese stores and staffing them with Americans?

Interesting that you equated racism with guarding the borders. If you look at what I wrote it implied or states nothing of the sort.

If one examines Japanese history they have even in their recent history displayed somewhat racist tendencies. When viewed from within their culture it can be explained away, but many from the outside view it as outrageous and borderline racist behavior. On the other hand they are welcoming of new technologies and techniques the better themselves no matter where it was developed. As with all generalities there are some flaws with this...but that's why people should do research and make up their own minds...just don't take someone's word for it. Especially mine.

This fact in no way precludes them from protecting their own borders. But could one imagine the outrage if ICE put up a poster depicting the same scene as the Japanese police did?

Respect for your culture & not allowing foreigners to change it against the will of the native born people is NOT racism, its freedom.

The baby boomer value system of hurting your own to help strangers has hurt western culture beyond repair.

I have a lot of friends who interface directly with the Japanese for business reasons as well as vacationing over there. Not one has mentioned anything about racism or xenophobia. In fact, the Japanese are heavily influenced by American and European culture which they welcome openly.

On the other hand, they also have a healthy respect for their own past and culture. It's what has kept them Japanese rather than being submerged into a generic Anglo-Euro multiculturalism. Something I think we had better start emulating and soon.

As for being serious about guarding their borders, I would suggest Mexico as numero uno. Their southern border, anyway.
