    3. What is your most treasured possession? My great-great grandfather’s Civil War documents and the dried Magnolia he kept from the siege of Port Hudson. Imagine, someone stopping to smell the flowers during battle.

    4. Where would you most like to live? Summer in Norway, winter in Kenyon, Minnesota.

    3. What is your most treasured possession? My great-grandfather’s lap desk, containing letters from his father in Norway. Not actually a possession; I have it in trust. But how is that different from anything else I own?

Days on end agonizing over a semi-colon, a hard deadline awaiting, a wretched registrar breathing down my neck, and oh yes, I also have to teach, too. Ain’t no nitrous oxide you can take to help you get through that.

    3. Treasured possession: I’m hopelessly unsentimental, but I would have to say my grandfather’s WW2 POW records. The Germans keep better records than anything. Fingerprinted, religion, hometown, two photos…

    1. Favorite occupation… Professor — love college kids, love easy summers, love reading books and talking about them and their ideas. Dream job? Dallas Cowboys QB or Rich Eisen’s job at NFL Network

    2. What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? Waking up the day after someone you love dies.

    1. What is your favorite occupation? Again, livin it. I wanted to be a mom and teacher. Next I’d like to be a midwife but I’d like to specialize in helping parents who either receive a fatal prenatal diagnosis or the knowledge that the child has already died have the birth experience they want. That or bereavement photography. Or both.
