Ah, WW2 indeed the greatest generation. One of our post yesterday got me pondering as to why we know longer do the sort of propaganda we did during WW2. Do you think it is because we no longer have Hollywood (the ultimate propaganda weapon)? Or is it our fear of violating the politically correct rules of offense supercedes our want to win wars?
Yeah, that photo was hardly unplanned – Doug was VERY MUCH aware of the importance of PR to fighting a war, and he carefully crafted his appearance. He hired his staff photographers and cameramen straight from Hollywood. The “I have returned” thing was shot at least four different times, with a uniform change in between each one. This was the best of the bunch – and a great, great photo – much better than the one where the general lost his footing and fell in the water.
Some people get all pissy when you point this out, because it destroys the illusion, but I’m the kind of guy who thinks illusions are more magical when you understand how much effort went in to making them. I also take it as a metaphor that history doesn’t just happen, you have to work at it.
That Wolverine column is truly amazing, R3 – thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I haven’t read the comics since the mini-series with Kitty Pryde time-period, but damn did I love reading the upside-down and backwards character study. Scarier (sadder?) yet that I still know those original Phoenix saga issues through about # 190 (Caliban and the Morlocks?) by heart.
You’re welcome, but I had little to do with it. And by “Little” I mean “Nothing.” It’s all Charlie’s writing, and it was R2’s idea to get him involved with the site. I’ll let ‘em know you likee.
I think I’ve got the ‘flu, and I’d like to vomit all over Dear Leader and his staff, because I’m sure that, somehow, they’re responsible.
Seriously. I can’t listen to the news or radio anymore, because these people. Are making me. Sick.
Sorry Wank, 5 out of 8 zoon children are down with the same stuff. It sucks. Good news is when you let the fever run it’s course, it usually only goes about 48 hours.
Say, what happened to our Catholic Cleric friend – the one with the sick mother? Has anyone heard from him in a while? Just suddenly realized he hasn’t been around in a bit, and given what he was saying about health problems in his family, that’s probably not a good sign. Anyone know? I’m concerned.
We seem to be missing Fr Ron, Fritz, and Mike. Fritz is still occasionally blogging but I miss him around here. Did Mike get a job? Is he seeing another blog behind our backs?
Hopes and prayers sent to Fr Ron (and to the others)

Unrelated to any of that, we’re running a scholarly article on Wolverine of the X-Men today. I don’t really like Marvel, so I’ve got no strong thoughts on it (X-men are what, like transexuals or something?), but I thought some of you folks might take more from it than I did.

Mike Kriskey? I have been traveling a lot and checking in rather infrequently. Has he gone missing?
I just checked the history log and his last posts were on October 13th! I hope all is well.
Yeah, Fr Ron is who I meant
