Is listening to the theme song to the kids show “Barney” over and over torture? How about Britney Spears?
This story from the LA Times details several “artists” attempts to ascertain if their “music” was used in torturing prisoners held at Gitmo. I especially enjoy the title of the piece, which conjures up a picture in my mind of GWB and VP Cheney rubbing their hands together as they slam another CD into the player while their victims scream for mercy in the background. The only way this could be any better would be if they found out that the music was downloaded from I-Tunes, illegally reproduced and then used to torment our Islamic friends.
Did Bush WH torture Gitmo prisoners with R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Sesame Street? Musicians demand records
October 23, 2009 | 8:08 amTorturing detainees with waterboarding is one thing. But now a coalition of musicians is demanding the details of the Bush administration practice of blasting music — everything from the Meow mix jingle to Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” — to try to coerce information from terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay.
“The fact that music I helped create was used in crimes against humanity sickens me,” said Tom Morello, once with the rap metal band Rage Against the Machine. “We need to end torture and close Guantanamo now.”
Rosanne Cash, daughter of famed country singer Johnny Cash, is also troubled by the allegation. “It seems so obvious,” she said. “Music should never be used as torture.”
To which I would reply, If music should never be used as torture then get some your friends to stop making “music”.

Meow Mix !Lord, that would be torture!
Over the years I’ve worked on software media projects where someone would find a music or video clip and use it in a test case. That clip would end up being used over and over and over and over during development. Often you never heard the whole thing, because usually all you needed to hear was the opening few seconds to know that your code was working. No one bothers to get other clips because they’ve got better things to do, and because of the new encoding schemes, there’s a limited number available anyhow. And they all seem just as bad, because they are usually from what’s really popular at the moment It can be really catchy and stick in your head no matter how you try not to hear it. Now that’s torture.
So, is Celine “Titanic” Dion and Brittney Spears on that list? ’cause they’ve tortured me in the past, and I think I deserve reparations.
I hate pussyfooting around – the CIA should’ve gone straight to Yoko One, and then they wouldn’t have had to bother with all these two bit artistes who think their “craft” is being abused.
If their music was used to uncover imminent danger to the US, that would be bad?
It’s just so sad when you are faced with the truth of your “talent”.
I love how the media and their fellow whores threw around the word “torture” as if its a settled score.
If you can’t prove it, which they didn’t, then “assert” the truth. Never stop the propaganda.
Indeed, Mr. Sideous. The media treats the entire myth of torture like the old “Do you still beat your wife” question. Any answer is tantamount to an admission.
On a side note, I just read a great bio of W.C. Fields by James Curtis. Too bad his full talent for juggling was never truly captured on film.
Loved the Curtis book. I have a copy of it myself. As for juggling, the closest we’ll get is the end of “The Old Fashioned Way”.
I believe I saw that clip on YouTube. I was truly impressed with the dedication Fields had to his craft. I was impressed with his self-education. To start out that young and to become so literate and such a wordsmith is amazing. Huzzah to Whitey Duckenfield.

Well, yeah, one would never be able to use, say, the Baroque Masters for such a purpose.
The subtext of the whining of these arteests…none of which I could give a rats furry bottom for is this: Our music sucked so bad they used it in interrogations? ARGHHH!
I meant to post this here:
Barney: Has there ever been a children’s show more mocked, lampooned, and parodied than Barney the Dinosaur?
