I was at this concert, not 15 feet from Bono. and you might be able to see my baseball hat about 2 minutes in.

Bono decided that he needed to mention that Bill Clinton, the "42nd President of the US" was in attendance, no doubt just before going out to Spearmint Rhino or Olympic Garden.

the context was Clinton's aid to Africa in the form of debt relief...but for some reason, I seem to remember Bush doing WAY more for Africa than Clinton ever thought of doing. At least both mentions of Clinton fell flat with almost no response.

oh, and this:

Aid to Africa is a noble gesture, but in the end it just becomes a form of welfare and we see how well that turns out for people.

I give kudos to Bono because I think he genuinely cares and he puts his money where his mouth is too; at least he tries to offer solutions instead of simplky telling you what a turd your leaders are because they don't see it his way....but at the same time at the concert I saw so many Amnesty International volunteers wearing T-shirts saying "Health Care is a Human Right." I almost challenged one of them...really...what happens when those smart enough to go to med school decline that option for another career that may be more lucrative? No "human right" if you got no one to provide the service.....

The late great Jesse Helms called him "Mr.Bono"....it was an unlikely friendship, but Helms(unlike liberals)put his money where his mouth was and supported aid for Africa, and Bono appreciated that. The last time that U2 was in Raleigh,Bono made a point of meeting Jesse again

Bono may or may not be a pretentious ass, but at the end of the day, I call him brother.
