The Overnights – 28 October 2009

Harrycare would appear to be dead on arrival, with Joe Lieberman joining Republicans in opposition and moderate Dems expressing reservations. That sure didn’t take long.

One of the biggest reasons that Senators like Lieberman and Kent Conrad won’t go along? The supposed state opt-out provision turns out not to be. Or, to quote Michelle Malkin, “there’s no there there.”

LawHawkSF gave us a nice breakdown of the UN’s Goldstone Report which – shocker – condemns Israel for just everything bad that has ever happened in the Middle East, along with 70’s fashion and the failure of the Chicago Cubs to raise a respectable baseball team for over a century. Sayeth the Hawk: “Simply put, the Report allows such nations as Libya, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Iran to declare open season on any Israeli who happens to wander within their territorial limits.” (You’ll find the post two down on Commentarama’s October 27 offerings).

In the “what the hell were they smoking?” category of columns, the Guardian’s Alex Renton examines the supposed environmental crisis afflicting the world, observes that modern civilization is to blame (duh!) and concludes that it would be best if America and Europe closed up shop and we all moved to Bangladesh. I am not making this up.

Is Politico rising on the official White House enemies list? If they keep this stuff up, they’ll lose their official “legitimate news organization” decoder ring. Consider this four line lead from yesterday:

“A four-hour stop in New Orleans, on his way to a $3 million fundraiser.”

“Snubbing the Dalai Lama.”

“Signing off on a secret deal with drug makers.”

“Freezing out a TV network.”

The headline read: “What if George W. Bush Had Done That?” Great stuff – I can just hear Axelrod squirming.

Wanna see a bureaucrat avoid uncomfortable questions whilst sporting the world’s creepiest smile? I give you Jennifer Lynch, head censor of the Canadian Human Rights/Everybody Gets Along Or We’ll Break Your Kneecaps Commission. You remember the Commission, right? The one that went after Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant? Well, here’s Lynch “testifying” before Parliament:

And here’s some more:

Steyn and Levant have some great commentary on Lynch’s non-testimony, testimony, but you can find that yourself pretty easily. Instead let’s give a shout out to the Scary Fundamendalist, who does a nice job of skewering Lynch.

That Politico story was featured on the Yahoo! homepage the other day. I was so shocked I almost choked on the apple I was eating.

  • There was a great moment in Lynch’s testimony (I think Part 3) in which she avoided answering the question by looking down and re-reading a random section of her opening remarks.

Or the moment at which she said, “Happily, Canada has a [human rights inquisition] process that is less formal than the courts…”

    [shudder]
