I do recall my dad saying "hot" rack, but I also think he said "hot" bunk. He slept in a hammock in some hold of the carrier, 700 leagues under the waterline. The hammocks were stacked 5 high, or so. You have to be hoping the guy in the hammock over you didn't eat the beans and hard-boiled egg casserole for dinner! You know, you might be right. Yes, Navy guys get better food. Yes, Navy guys get to travel to fun, exotic ports. But none of that made up for having to "hot" bunk.
