In regarding Navy and "Hot Bunking" most sailors did more than sleep, they were very lonley. Then one might call it perversion many years ago , today it is called "don't ask don't tell"

You know, you might be right. I do recall my dad saying "hot" rack, but I also think he said "hot" bunk. He slept in a hammock in some hold of the carrier, 700 leagues under the waterline. The hammocks were stacked 5 high, or so. You have to be hoping the guy in the hammock over you didn't eat the beans and hard-boiled egg casserole for dinner!

'"hot" bunk'? The term I knew was "hot rack" ... not that I'm quibbling or anything ... and I thank God that I never had to experience that during my time at sea.

My old man was an aircraft mechanic on a carrier, back when real planes flew by propellor. Yes, Navy guys get better food. Yes, Navy guys get to travel to fun, exotic ports. But none of that made up for having to "hot" bunk.
