Was It Good for You, Too?

Voting Republican in elections around here can sometimes seem like an exercise in futility.  Here in Stamford, Democrats outnumber Republicans two-to-one, so while I never fail to vote I also never have any hope that my candidate will win.  (One positive effect of being so outnumbered is that I never have to wait in line to vote in a Republican primary.)

But this year, something remarkable happened.  Wednesday morning, I was greeted with the news that Stamford has its first Republican mayor in fourteen years.  They also control the Board of Finance for the first time in sixteen years.

And it wasn’t just Stamford.  Across the true-blue State of Connecticut, Republicans posted gains in some previously solid Democratic territory.  Add to this turn of events the strong possibility that Senator Chris Dodd (D–Countrywide) will lose his re-election bid next year, and I think some optimism is in order.

In state-wide politics, Ned Lamont, the loony lefty who was defeated by Joe Lieberman as an independent in the general election, has announced that he is looking into a run for the governor’s office.  Current Governor Jodi Rell hasn’t decided whether she will seek re-election, but I think this will be good news for whichever candidate the Republicans put up.  There may be enough hard-left voters to give Lamont the nomination, but—as Connecticut demonstrated in 2006 and again this week—we haven’t all lost our minds yet.

Anybody have any election news from their neck of the woods?

    WHOOOWHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Nuthin here. Gotta wait till Florida’s GOP primary next spring to vote for Marco Rubio. Hey if you all are willing, go to his website and send him some cash. We need to get rid of RINOS and Christe is a HUGE RINO!

And I was hoping Mike’s first post back would be a rendition of “Sweet Transvestite.” Oh, the disappointment.

Wonder of wonders, my governor will soon no longer be Jon Corzine. I swear, I would have put cash money on it that what would happen would be: Christie would be close, maybe tied or a point ahead, and then the Democrat machine would suddenly start “finding” extra ballots from places like Jersey City.

State house is still in the hands of the Dems, but that kind of doesn’t matter; both parties are pretty miserable in this state, and corruption runs all the way down through the municipal level even to the school boards. But at least with a reform-minded Republican in the top spot in the state, maybe just maybe we can roll taxes back a point or two, and squeeze out some of the more egregious examples of corruption. We’ll see.

Now if we could get that zombie Frank Lautenberg out of the US Senator’s seat, to which he had no business taking possession of in the first place….

Frank Lautenberg was senator from 1982 to 2000, then retired because he was freakin’ old. I can’t tell you one darn thing he did except vote the party line.

Then in 2002, incumbent Bob Torricelli, who was running for re-election, found himself up to his eyeballs in federal corruption charges. The guy was toast. So what did he do? Announce that he wasn’t going to run for re-election after all, and the state Democratic party announced that good ol’ Frank Lautenberg was being trotted out of retirement to run one mo’ time. Despite the fact that according to state election laws it was waaay past the time where that kind of move was allowed. And the NJ Supreme Court said, meh. whatevs.

Then the moron people of my home state went to the polls, saw Lautenberg’s name on the ballot, and said, hey look! Frank! Is he still alive? Is he still senator? Is he running for re-election? Hmm. His name is familiar to me, so I’ll vote for him.

Only Robert Byrd is older than Frank Lautenberg.

Funny you speak of Stamford. I used to know a few other people from there, but I haven’t heard from either of them in years.
