A few of you may remember “Shit My Dad Says,” the only Twitter account I’ve yet dared to link to (outside of Michael Yon). The account, started in August, has now been signed by CBS to a TV deal.
Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick are on board to executive produce and supervise the writing for the multicamera family comedy, which Halpern will co-pen with Patrick Schumacker. Halpern and Schumacker will also co-exec produce the Warner Bros. TV-produced project, which has received a script commitment.
Halpern, 29, had moved back in with his parents in San Diego, and on Aug. 3 he launched “Shit My Dad Says,” a Twitter feed featuring colorful — often profane — comments and pearls of wisdom made by his 73-year-old father during their daily conversations.
One problem – the blog is incessantly profane and politically incorrect. But ruining content has never stopped anyone from making a movie or TV show.
I should’ve thought about exposing my own old man’s musings on Twitter, or anywhere online. Oh well, I still have his fake book titles and authors to go by, like “Revenge of the Tiger” by Claude Bawls.
I always liked 100 Yards to the Outhouse by Willie Makeit and Trails in the Sand by Peter Dragon. But then I’m still 12.
Or Rusty Bedsprings by I.P. Niteleigh, or Tragedy On The Cliffs by Eileen Dover, or Consenting Adults by Abel N. Willing, or Italian Cooking On The Cheap by Pete Saar, or The Perils Of Obesity by Erasmus B. Huge, or New Hobbies by Phil Devoyde, or Gay Ireland by Gerald Fitzpatrick and Patrick Fitzgerald, or…
Or The Truth About Rufus’ Shoe Size by Hugh G. Rexon.
Our version is A Line in the Sand by Dick Dragin. My brother and I are photoshopping these fake books and making a fake book of the month ad.
Heard the part of the dad will be played by Joe Biden.
If only Twitter had existed 25 years ago…….sigh……I’d be a millionaire right now.
Here’s my question… did the dad know about the Twitter feed? Or is he just now being told now that the guy has a tv deal? And how do you tell him? “hey dad, there’s this thing out there called Twitter, and you’re kind of, sort of semi-famous on it.”
If that’s the case, I would love to hear that conversation.
