3D Weekend Five Battle of the Bands: Stones v. Zeppelin

Split your list, or have ‘em all one or the other; I’ll be counting up votes (#1s count twice) and posting the results, from all five of us, on Monday:

5. Angie (Stones): Hated this song when it first came out; then a few years ago I heard it on the radio — first time in forever, you know how that is — and it shattered me.

4. Gimme Shelter (Stones): That refrain…it’s just a shot away…

3. It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It) (Stones): One of the best songs ever; one of those songs that explains why the best music is the best — it’s written in blood! “If I could stick my pen in my heart /And spill it all over the stage /Would it satisfy ya?”

2. D’yer Mak’er (Zeppelin): How anguished can you get?  I still shout out that refrain like I’m drunk in a bar.  Even when I’m not.

1. Stairway to Heaven (Zeppelin): The Greatest Rock Song of All Time.  When I started liking this, I knew I’d become a grown-up.  Musically speaking.

    5) Miss You (Stones)

    4) Wild Horses (Stones)

    3) Immigrant Song (Zeppelin)

    2) Stairway to Heaven (Zeppelin)

    1) Trampled Underfoot (Zeppelin)

  • The College Widow

I have to confess my loyalty to my favorite band of all time, Dread Zeppelin. For those who may not be familiar they are simply put, a band that plays Led Zep in a reggae style with an Elvis impersonator. It’s not just novelty stuff or a cover band with a twist, they make the old chestnut Led Zeppelin songs sound new again. And they are officially endorsed by Robert Plant.

In keeping with the spirit of the list:
    5. Sympathy for the Devil (Stones) – love the latin-dance rhythm type beat

    4. Paint It Black (Stones) – again with the hypnotic rhythm

    3. Gimme Shelter (Stones) – groovy and always fresh to me

    2. Anything from Physical Graffiti (Led Zep)

    1. The Song Remains the Same (Led Zep) – Jimmy Page is a genius. Love the way the guitars ring out like a bell.

  • Jake Taylor

For the sake of giving myself more options without neglecting obviously great songs, I’ve rated Stairway and Satisfaction as de facto #1′s for each group. I cheat.

    5) Sympathy for the Devil (Stones)
Sexiest song about Satan I’ve ever heard.
    4) Paint it Black (Stones)- So dark, but playful too. Jagger having fun.
    3) Gimme Shelter (Stones)- Merry Clayton’s voice crack in the third chorus, followed by Jagger’s “Woo!” makes this song.
    2) Black Dog (Zeppelin)- Pure rock and roll. My favorite riff of all time.
    1) Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You (Zeppelin) – Everything that was great about Zeppelin in one song – awesome blues, wailing over-the-top vocals, driving rhythm and, if I may, incendiary guitar.

  • 5. Carouselambra (Zep)
    4. Paint It Black (Stones)
    3. Soul Survivor (Stones)
    2. No Quarter (Zep)
    1. Salt of the Earth (Stones)

Top 5: All Stones. Never was much of a Led Zep fan. Stairway To Heaven keeps making me think of a three hour tour, and while the Immigrant Song has an undeniable attraction, the subsequent rise of Spinal Tap has made it harder for me to unironically give myself up to its charms.

    In no particular order:

Miss You – (“Hey! whassamatta man, we gonn’ come around twelve wit some pawta riccan girls thass juss dyyyyyyyn to meechoo!”)

Brown Sugar – yet more political incorrectness.

Jumpin’ Jack Flash – “I was crowned with a spike with through my [effin'] head”. There’s that line, and there’s the harmonica blast at the end. Love the harmonica blast.

Under My Thumb – a song whose choruses I’d bellow in the most ugly fashion, while crying into my beer. Gad, it made me feel better when I was low.

and #1, so it can be counted:

Honky Tonk Women – great guitar line, great verses, great chorus. My only quibble would be, would barroom queens in Memphis be gin soaked? Nevertheless.

    • Jake Was Here

“My only quibble would be, would barroom queens in Memphis be gin soaked?”

Give them a break, they’re British.

Peter Gabriel tried to write The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway with American lingo, but even he got confused and said “notes and coins” instead of “bills and change”.

  • 1. When the Levee Breaks – because it’s my theme song

    2. The Ocean – John Bonham’s so good…

    3. Gimme Shelter – just put that intro on a loop for me

    4. Hey Hey What Can I Do – Plant’s vocals were never better

    5. Sympathy for the Devil – love the percussion and the piano part’s not too shabby

  • Floyd

    1. Pain it Black

    2. When the Levee Breaks

    3. Black Dog

    4. Sympathy for the Devil

    5. Gimme Shelter

  • Jake Was Here

    My list:
    5. The Battle of Evermore (Zep)
    4. Ruby Tuesday (Stones)
    3. Immigrant Song (Zep)
    2. Paint It Black (Stones)
    1. When The Levee Breaks (Zep)

    My wife’s list:
    5. As Tears Go By (Stones)
    4. Good Times Bad Times (Zep)
    3. The Song Remains The Same (Zep)
    2. Ruby Tuesday (Stones)
    1. She’s A Rainbow (Stones)

  • 5. Night Flight (Zep- An obscure one on Physical Graffiti)
    4. Gimme Shelter (Stones- Just a great song)
    3. Wanton Song (here is a great version of Page/Plant performing a version http://motorcitytimes.com/mct/music-video-page-and-plant-performing-the-wanton-song/)
    2. Miss You (Stones)
1.66 Fool In The Rain (Zep)
    1.33 Communication Breakdown (Zep)
1.00 Good Times Bad Times (Zep)

I had the three in a tie, then I remembered that you were doing a Tally, so I made good times bad times number 1
