Smmmmmoooookin!
OMG! OMG! OMG!
Here in the enviro world, we are all atwitter, like a bunch of thirteen year old girls who have just found out that the modern equivalent of David Cassidy is coming to our school.
SOMEBODY HACKED CRU!!!!!!
What? Why aren’t you jumping up and down?
LET ME REPEAT: SOMEBODY HACKED CRU!!!!!!!
OK. I’ll explain. (OMG! OMG! OMG!)
Calm down Trzuper…
“CRU” is short hand for the East Anglian Climate Research Unit – one of the big players in the global warming world. Someone (whom will go straight to heaven when they die!) hacked into their computer and has released hundreds of files from AGW types. Watt was among the first to break the story.
The files were uploaded to a Russian FTP server with this statement:
We feel that climate science is, in the current situation, too important to
be kept under wraps. We hereby release a random selection of correspondence, code, and documents.
Legit? It would appear so. Steve McIntyre (a leading skeptic and a fine fellow) reports that CRU has canceled all of their passwords today. “Actions speak louder than words,” Mac said.
People will be analyzing the files down for a while, but the early returns are fascinating. Take this statement, in an e-mail from Prof. Phil Jones at CRU to the creators of the infamous “hockey stick” graph:
I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps
to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from
1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.
This is going to be so much fun.

Imagine what kind of interesting bits of information a search warrant would yield.
Time to sic the FBI on NOAA?
BTW – I used to work with Anthony Watts at a TV station in Chico, CA. Small world.
This post combines two things I know zilch about: Computers and sciencey things. I’ll take Rich’s word that it’s big news.
Ditto. It’s times like these I hope there are enough literate wonks among the good guys to translate all of this into language that us lay folk can understand.
So this is going to be the Dan Rather-style story of global warming??
That quote from Jones is amazing! I can’t wait to hear more! I don’t know anything about this subject and I’m still excited because it might lead to Al Gore crying.
For ye non-techies – think of that quote as a layer of whitewash. Jones is admitting that they found some uncomfortable data that would help disprove AGW (man-made global warming) and figured out a way to disguise it. “Hide the decline” is the key phrase. This equates to: can’t show that temperatures are dropping – ever!
More gems to post. I’ll do so in the comments here!
OMG!!!!
Rich,
I understand the smoking gun nature here, because the culprit admits his duplicity, but hasn’t the hockey stick fudging of the data already been proven? I know it’s not common knowledge, and this indicts this pseudo-scientist as part of the conspiracy, but scientists have known of this fallacy for years, true? I know non-scientist enviro-weenies who couldn’t pass a High School chemistry class don’t, but all the folks in the know do, right?
Absolutely Ruf. Even Gavin Schmidt and James Hanson (two of the bigger AGW weenies) will grudgingly admit that the hockey-stick doesn’t “exactly fit” the data. Never saw anyone actually explain the deception this clearly though. Jones is currently trying to set a world-record in the 100 meter back-peddle, claiming that people don’t understand what he meant here!
Cool! I love it when scientists clash!

The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t. The CERES data published in the August BAMS 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong. Our observing system is inadequate.”
All of these guys are AGW big shots. Can’t account for the lack of warming? I didn’t think there was any “lack of warming”.
Go figure…
In essence, “the data does not fit our hypothesis so the data must be wrong.”
Even my 7th grade science teacher would fail him, and I went to a sh*tty grammar school…
Commenters at Climate Audit are warning not to get too excited too soon. I’ve read some of the e mails and the time tags have been changed and some of them just don’t pass the smell test.
Either that, or those warmongers are far more corrupt than even their critics thought possible. Anyway, as someone said, anyone clever enough to hack the file could be clever enough to salt it with disinformation.
Of course, that would still be great just for the mischef it creates in a stuffy community.

Subject: LAND vs OCEAN

We probably need to say more about this. Land warming since 1980 has been twice the ocean warming — and skeptics might claim that this proves that urban warming is real and important.”
EXPLANATION: Skeptics have long said that the data “proving” global warming has been badly skewed by the location of urban temperature measurement stations. This e-mail would appear to confirm that there are some people in the AGW community who agree.
I repeat: go figure!
According to Dr. Jones – the files are the real deal:

Professor Mikey Mann (aka Mr Hockey Stick) appears to be rather worried. According to The Guardian, Mann said:
“I’m simply not going to comment on the content of illegally obtained emails. However, I will say this: both their theft and, I believe, any reproduction of the emails that were obtained on public websites, etc, constitutes serious criminal activity. I’m hoping that the perpetrators and their facilitators will be tracked down and prosecuted to the fullest extent the law allows.”

Rush led with this at noon. I guess CRU has evaded most sunshine and FOIA attempts through the years. Ironic they get clinched by a hacker. Rush stated his “official climatologist” believes the files are legit. I guess I should jump on my righteous soap box and admonish the criminality involved here, but given how my journalistic betters at places like the Times get rich off leaking classified info (not to mention the cheers that greeted the Palin e-mail hacker), I think I’ll loan that soapbox to CRU to prop up the hockey-stick graph.
Nice shot of the Glock “10″. That’s the big one!
Actually, it’s a Glock 29. But whatever, a day with any Glock is a good day to be had.
Like to see how that Al Gore apologist, ABC’s Dan Harris, is going to try and spin this to fit his skewed view of the world.
I’ve been personally keeping high/low temp. records for Las Vegas, NV for quite some time. Almost without exception all the record highs were during the 1930s, with only an occasional tie for that particular day’s record high. There have been no exceeding of the original record highs, only as I said, a few ties. It should be noted that even with the massive building boom in Vegas since the 1980s, the temperature highs have been on the decline. The records I have researched are received from local Channel 8 (CBS), and are from their own weather archives. It should be noted that despite their own records, they tend to continue to sound the “global warming” alarm at least once a week during their evening news program.
Someone needs to personally keep rectal temperature records of Al Gore.
Rufus, we can let Bawney Fwank handle that one!
I have downloaded the zip file and started looking through things. Certainly looks legit to me. There are over 4,000 individual documents here. Most are rather innocuous – bureaucratic and academic flotsam and jetsam. If one was going to create red herrings, I can’t imagine somebody going to the trouble to fake 4,000 different documents, created with dozens of different programs, most of which are boring and uninteresting as hell.
This could be very interesting, as people continue to mine the information for hidden gems. Wonder what the MSM will do?
“bureaucratic flotsam and jetsam”
Sounds like something you’re more likely to find in the Congressional men’s room than in a database.
FOX has it now:

This hacker was obviously a racist and a sexist, since climate change is a minority and women’s issue. Or was that healthcare? I can’t remember…
Can we rescind Al Gore’s Oscar yet?
