The future Mrs. V seems to have it in her head to get married at a vineyard which is odd because neither her or I drink. Given that I don’t drink my expertise on vineyards is minimal so with that said does anyone know of any really beautiful vineyards in the US? I’d prefer to avoid California because I’m afraid I might burst into flames when I cross state lines (sort of like a vampire walking into a church) and since we are looking at a fall wedding I’m leaning toward the northeast due to the purty’ foilage. Any guidance would be appreciated.
In spite of having a brother who lives in Long Beach I’ve never actually been to CA. Do they get the same sort of foilage effect in the fall there that you would get in the north east?
Believe it or not, yes. Was almost tempted to make a pile of leaves ’round the corner just so I could jump in them. Sadly, Pablo Honey wouldn’t let me borrow his rake.
FYI: Powell and Lombard were married and divorced by the time “Godfrey” was made. They had a very good friendship that endured and had no problem working together. I agree that Powell had better chemistry with the lovely Myrna Loy. Lombard does play the loopy heiress quite well though. I love William Powell…a personal hubba-hubba for The College Widow. So suave and love those dimples.
Veruckt, I hate outdoor weddings but that’s just me. No advice here except that the groom has a rough way to go in planning weddings since he is little more than a prop. Wherever you have the nuptials I hope it’s everything your bride desires.
I’m off to work and then engage in Thanksgiving fun with the family. My best to all Threedonians.
Yeah Lars, but nobody did screwball like Lombard. Myrna Loy was too sharp to pull that off I think. Being in a triangle with Carole Lombard and Gail Patrick couldn’t have been all bad.
Floyd, I once saw a documentary on Loy that described her as the ultimate wife. Most movies at the time were focused on the pursuit of a mate and few movies dealt with what happened after, especially harmonious married life. Myrna Loy played the loving and beautiful wife every man would love to come home to. I especially liked her in the WWII era “The Best Years of Our Lives”. Oh and don’t forget her cameo in “Airport 1975″.
I too am nervous about outdoor weddings since, contrary to Al Gore, you can’t predict the weather especially a year in advance but I’ll put in my due dilligence investigating.
G-man,
When she first said vineyard I thought of Martha’s because it’s the only one I’d heard of…turns out that one is really, really pricey. My Mom is telling me to look up at the Finger Lakes area in NY. There is much research ahead.
There’s lots of pretty vinyards here in Tx, believe it or not. I love outdoor weddings, had one myself, in August, in Texas. We did it in the morning though to avoid the heat. Do try and keep the perspective that even if everything goes wrong, you’ll still be married and at least you’ll have some fun stories.
My grandparents got into a fist fight, a fern tried to kill our pastor, the cake was ugly and not done all the way, my uncle was our videographer and missed me coming in to the song zoon wrote for me. But I married the man I wanted and 17 years later we laugh about our wedding and rejoice that we are married.
I second the others Veruckt. Ask your intended where she wants to get married and then make it happen. If her family’s paying for it then you just show up — nod at the colors (unless they’re truly horrendous — then just stay still), say “Mmmmmmmm….” at the cake, put on your tux and say “I do”.
Yeah Scott I went to the Arrington Vineyard with the future Mrs. V, my mother, and her boyfriend (the world’s loudest man) and it was beautiful. It was our visit there that triggered her wanting to have it at a vineyard but, as odd as it sounds, we want to have our wedding out of state so we can keep it smaller. We’ll have a big party when we get back.
Worth mentioning the future Mrs. V and I are paying for our own wedding (neither of us “come from money” so to speak) but I consider this a good thing since it really allows us to have control over it rather then caving to the wishes of over zealous in laws and parents.
Yeah,Veruckt,I saw that Arrington website this morning..looks nice. Why don’t you have a Greek wedding at the Parthenon (anyone who has never been to Nashville has no idea what I’m talking about):you could grab a handful of lightning bolts and be Zeus!
Veruckt, don’t know if you saw this way up there on the thread, but this sounds like what you’re looking for. And while in RI, you can check out Newport for the mansions, the court house where John Adams tried the Amistad case, and the Newport Tower that some say that the Knights Templar built when they journeyed to America before Columbus did.

I have friends who own a beautiful vineyard. It’s in California.

Powell was great, but something’s missing when Myrna Loy doesn’t show up.

I second that. Stay the hell out of her way, stand wherever she tells you to stand and do whatever she tells you to do and you’ll be fine.
Neither Lombard nor Loy could hold a candle to Margaret Dumont. I could dance with her ’til the cows come home.
If you held a candle to Margaret Dumont, it would be to give her a hotfoot.

V-
I’ve heard Martha has a Vineyard. Seriously, she’s wanting you to take her to France. hehe
Have a great Thanksgiving, TCW.
Thanks, G-Man…to you and yours as well!

Forget all that mess,Veruckt…head for Vegas!Fritz can be your best man….

My comment is awaiting moderation? Shit,Floyd,I didn’t even curse!
I don’t know…. it’s touchy sometimes. It seems to rotate. And I’ve even found my own comments in the filter before so ownership has few privileges.
There are vineyards in Middle TN,V…

No wonder the bills are so costly. All the wrong people are writing it.
