My quibble was in no way intended as a judgment on Floyd’s tastes, or a criticism of his posting this clip. It was just a personal response.

Chaplin was definitely a Red. But he was a Red that was responsible for some of the greatest movie moments of all time. If anyone hasn’t see the criminally underrated “Limelight” do so quickly.

I like them just fine. I doubt I’m supporting Chaplin any longer and we’ll use Tim Robbins as an example…. Shawshank Redemption is a fantastic movie — great conservative story. If I didn’t watch because I give a rat’s ass about Tim Robbins views I’d be the lesser for it. Ditto all manner of artists from Voltaire, Wagner, etc., etc. If I stuck to conservatives I’d then have to weed out the atheists and all manner of Randians…. I look to story mostly. Often times a good artist will hit all the right notes — even if by accident because those conservative notes — honor, courage, tradition, etc. are the very stuff of good storytelling. Even if they don’t pay knowing homage to it those things are part of the “law written on our hearts” as the scripture would say. They are things universal to everyone — even if many don’t practice the virtues — they recognize them on some level.

Was Chaplin a Red? Perhaps (or definitely). City Lights is a great story of helping your neighbor, gratitude, looking deeper than the surface at people, etc. What’s NOT conservative about that story — even if there might be moments in the telling with which I disagree?

But, Dr. Floyd, if you financially support those who oppose you, they’ll take the money you give them and use it to defeat you.

You’d have more books and CDs/DVDs than you propose; they’d just be created by more conservative folks. And, you’d learn to like them.

Posting Chaplin in no way implies superiority over anyone else –as I always tell my children when I praise one of them.

And a Red… hell if I had a strict litmus test or if I cared about the personal/political views of artists, musicians, etc. I’d have 3 CDs, 4 DVDs, and maybe 50 books total.
