No moisturiser would sell in the Philippines unless it claimed to lighten skin.
Really…
Enbrethiliel… is there a racialist tone to all that or is it strictly aesthetic like tanning lotions here in the U.S.?
+JMJ+
Yes, it’s very racialist . . . and socio-economic. Lighter skin is associated with the upper classes (who used to be mostly Creole, and are now greatly Chinese); dark skin, with the lower classes.
Whitening lotions and creams are huge in Asian markets. The Future Mrs. V has told me that they’re everywhere in Thailand and that there is a huge blackmarket for them. My friend Jackie who is Chinese still orders one from China once every couple of months in spite of it costing $150.00 a pop.
Both have also told me that there is a definite stigma to having darker skin in Asian culture.
Why can’t people just be happy with what they have? Sighhhhhhhhhh…………
I love my Olay. Been using it since I was 15 and it does work.
The grass is always greener….
Meanwhile, back here in “Whiteville” I’ve always tried to get a great tan going so I wouldn’t look pasty. Does that make me a reverse racist?
No, Fritz, it just makes you an honorary Irishman.
Relatives who’ve spent time in China tell me that Asians generally consider themselves the superior race, followed by other Asians, followed by Whites, with Blacks on the very bottom.
Which means that the president’s bow to the Emperor of Japan can be seen as an act of Uncle Tom-ism that ought to appall African Americans.
And this coming from the culture that goes into the bathroom in the sand of the beach, then put up their umbrellas and lay out their towels. Like a vry large sand box.
Not as large as Outlaw’s, but you get the idea…
To this day, I have no idea why our society acts as though America is the only country with racism in our history. Ask any black person who has tried to live anywhere in Asia, he’ll tell you that it’s not exactly the multi-cultural wonderland that many think it is.

Those would be East Asians, Lars, who aren’t exactly popular among the Asians who make up the rest of the continent.
Correction noted, Enbrethiliel.
Better than looking DINGY,eh,Fritz?
