Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For You…

santamilitary

Listen up, Threedonia!  The gang here have gathered together on a fun project for the Holidays and you get to play along.  As you know, many of our troops are stationed in tough places, deprived of comforts, busting their humps to keep you and yours warm and safe.  If you could do something to make their lives better wouldn’t you?  Sure, and we’re here to make it easy for you.

We know someone, an Army Aviator (don’t ever call him a pilot), who is currently serving in Iraq.  He has volunteered to play Santa, and make sure whatever Threedonia sends his way gets distributed to the hard working Army men and women working with him in Iraq.  We’ve also got someone here in the states who has volunteered to ship the stuff to him.  See?  We’ve made this super easy for you!  All you have to do is throw a few things into a box or mail pouch and send it to:

S. Claus

44 Strawberry Hill Avenue #1M

Stamford, CT 06902

and then go about your Holiday business guilt-free, knowing that you’ve done something to help a soldier in Iraq have a Merry Christmas!

Here are suggestions on what to send:

  • Chocolate candy (the Army Aviator mentioned Mounds bars by name, just a tip for single, Threedonian women looking to impress a pilot aviator.)
  • Snacks; individually packaged peanuts, pretzels, fritos corn chips and other salty stuff that’s not good for you.
  • Books, magazines, DVDs movies or TV shows

It’s really that easy!  Please also feel free to throw in a card or letter, personally thanking them for what they do for us.  Also, throw a dollar or two in to cover the postage to Iraq, otherwise Santa will have to dip into his beer money and that might throw off his dart game.

Thanks for your help!

    Great idea, Rufus! Thank you.

It’s a team effort, but thanks on the team’s behalf.

Now go buy some fritos, mounds bars and DVDs of your favorite movies and drop ‘em in the mail!

  • A signed copy of the whirlwind bestseller, West Oversea, by the underrated Lars Walker will go in the mail shortly.

“Remember, West Oversea is the perfect Christmas gift for everyone on your list. Even if they don’t read books. Because they should.”

This has been an unpaid commercial plug.

If any of you send something, and wish to share, let us know in the comments (there will be posts on this everyday). It might be a fun insight into your personalities; especially DVD and book selections.

OK will do….any suggestions on books or DVDs..have a feeling Caddy Shack, Blazing Saddles are already in the collection :)

  • Mr. Sideous

the DVD of Taken, a bag of Mounds and Fritos, and an inflatable Maaat Daaaamon punching bag will be out shortly.

  • Any “guesstimates” on how much money for shipping overseas? I’d like to contribute – but want to make sure the shipping expense is covered.

    • Kenn… shipping to an APO address uses domestic shipping rates. We may have to use express mail which would increase the costs though. Express Overnight Mail starts at $13.00 for a flat rate envelope and goes up from there. The very most outlandishly expensive shipping would be $260 for a 70 lb. package to zone 8. I’m unsure as to which APO zip is Outlaw’s. If we hit 70 lbs. of stuff I’d be truly amazed.

      • Rufus

I’m shooting for 700lbs! Set your goals, high, Floyd! These men and women deserve it!!
Kenn, Floyd is right on the shipping. If you include what your cost to ship to Connecticut is that ought to cover the expense to get it to the troops.

  • I know for a fact that they also are in desperate need of Texas salsa – particularly Jardine’s Southwest Cilantro w/lime. If you can find a few jars in your local grocery, pack them very carefully (lots of padding). Be sure to put tape over the lids, to keep them from opening during transit (it does make a big mess!). Don’t bother sending any of that crap made in New Jersey! Microwave popcorn, and Wolf brand chili (no beans) go over pretty well also.

The Post Office APO/FPO priority mail boxes are great for this – I have sent about 70 of them over during this deployment (so far). Have gotten up to 20lbs worth of crap into them, and it only costs 11.95 to ship (no matter the weight). Do remember that you will have to fill out the long customs form with each box. Tape the boxes well, multiple gorillas will attack them at each stop the box makes.

Have heard that female type items are also wished for (not for Outlaw, but for the Outlawettes) as these are in short supply at the local general store.

These folks truly do appreciate anything, including just a card or letter saying hello and thankyou.

  • And another thing … right now, boxes take 7-10 days to make the journey. As we get closer to XMas, this will lengthen due to the system bgetting jammed up with mail. So …. if you want something to arrive by Christmas Day, you best get it in the mail within the next few days. However …. don’t let the date stop you – they will appreciate your contributions tot he effort whenever the boxes happen to show up on Outlaw’s desk!

  • Tink in Cali

Just stocked up at Smart & Final and the local video store. Lots of sweet & salty snacks on the way and season 3 of “The Girls Next Door” and season 5 of “The Shield” on the way. Should be able to get to UPS tomorrow. Can’t think of a better pairing than a box of Mounds and a bevy of blonde busties. :)

  • “The Girls” on the TOC video screen …. We’ll be able to hear the hooting and cat calls all the way over here!!!

  • Folks, if you are worried about sending something someone else has already sent, don’t…. It’s a big unit, lots of folks who would be happy to receive goodies…. possible duplication will just result in more folks getting to enjoy the stuff.

Going shopping as soon as I get the tree and house organized. I have a huge mess on my hands. We had to get a Charlie Brown tree this year. If we had the house for it…there was this one..had to be `10 feet tall..oh to have a tree like that to decorate. So once this is dragged into line I will go and start organizing some stuff to send.

  • Don’t forget to be a “friend” of Rudy’s BBQ on FaceBook. Also buy something on-line from them it’s for a good cause.

Since no one bothered to comment on that post…I really don’t know who read it, here’s the link again:

There’s over 400 people in my unit, believe me it will get used, seen or eaten whatever it may be.

  • Outlaw… is the Internet too slow there for things like iTunes cards?

    • I-Tunes is kind of spotty, I’ve just now caught up on downloading “The Office”. I’m not saying it wouldn’t be used, it’s just really slow sometimes.

Cards from kids are always entertaining…because as you well know they do say the darnedest things.

      • Matt Helm

Mine do. In this week’s Spelling test they had the word “shot” and one kid spelled it as “shit.” This happens every year, but it never fails to send me into the next door teacher’s room to show her so we can have a laugh.

      • Rufus

My kids have written cards for the troops that just about get me to cry. I imagine most soldiers really appreciate them. They have the added effect of helping me realize what a louse their old man is.

        • Matt Helm

I must be a long lost son of yours, because I’ve been trying to help you realize that for years. I’m just wondering if things that we ship to Tanta Kringle, to ship to Iraq, will get there by Christmas if we send them by WHAT deadline? Or are we looking for a Charlie Mingus note kind of a date that hits somewhere around Dec. 25th, but is still relevant to the tune?

And Outlaw, do you guys have an Xbox 360 out there and would like some like-new games?

  • Matt Helm

How about cards made by First Graders in addition to any loot?
