Driving in to work this morning, the burning question posed on Mike & Mike in the morning (ESPN radio, for you non sports types) was: is Die Hard a Christamas movie or not? Mike argued that it is, becauase the holiday season is an intergral part of the movie. In addition, one could argue that there is all sorts of redemption, in classic Christmas movie style. Mike, on the other hand, said that it is not a Christmas movie. Die Hard, he argued, is an action movie that just happens to occur during the holidays.
I am inclined to agree with Mike, but I also wonder what you think.

It is definitely a Christmas movie, much like Gremlins can be thought of. As stated, the holiday and imagery were integrated into it. ‘Ho-ho-ho Now I have a machine gun’, while sleigh bells jingle in the background. Let-it-Snow during the end credits, the Christmas themed wrapping tape to hide the gun on his back…
Okay, so maybe it shouldn’t make the cut like “It’s a Wonder Life”, but “Die Hard” will always be on my Christmas viewing list, now in shiny High Def!
Don’t forget the dead terrorist in the elevator in the Santa hat.
I too agree with Mike. But not with Rich.
Of course it’s Christmas movie
I agree with Mighty Skip (and Mike), but does that mean we can loosely consider Better Off Dead one, too? Chris’-mas, Chris’-mas!!!
(In my best Obama voice) “Let me be clear: Mike is wrong, while Mike is right.”
Doesn’t make my cut. Now, “Christmas Carol II: The Revenge of Tiny Tim!” (He’s got a semiautomatic crutch–and an attitude!) — that’s a Christmas movie.
MIKE IS RIGHT!
5 Reasons Die Hard Is the Best Christmas Movie Ever Made.
(Language alert.)
Note: the Cracked article is not actually funny—just relevant.
I am totally cool with blowing up Thomas Kinkade paintings.
Do they have another use?
Its a Christmas action movie
Stephanie, you took the words right out of my mouth! Or rather, off my keyboard.
I’m with you on this.
I’d vote yes, it is a Christmas movie. Certainly much more so than most of the god-awful “Christmas” movies shoved at us these days – the vast majority of which I’ve never (and will never) see, but all seem to involve some variation on “My family hates each other because we live in the suburbs and we’re all horrible people and I hate my life. Oh, and Christians are creepy idiots.”
Jake, an apt summation of why I stay away from most current movies.
Ok, if it’s a Christmas movie then Lethal Weapon is too.
For the record, dr zoon agrees with me. And not just because I’m his wife, he disagrees with me all the time (and he’s usually right, but I’ll deny ever saying that)
I belive Die Hard was the first movie to make use of Run DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis” within a Christmas-y context. That to me,`as the unofficial film critiquer of Threedonia, makes it a Christmas movie. That Bruce Willis is running around with an MP-5 and a Berretta 9mm makes it all the better.
Run DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis” is nothing without the ultra-wicked sample of Clarence Carter’s “Backdoor Santa.”
And Christmas is nothing without Run DMC, a few 9mm and an MP-5. Now I have a machine gun, Ho Ho Ho.
80s/early 90s rap would be pretty lonely without the prior existence of JB’s genius. Only so many times you can recycle Billy Squier’s “The Big Beat.”
Now that’s funny!
Christmas movie
Best Christmas movie of all time, period. Just ask my kids, they’ll both agree. I raised them right!
