  • Pretty funny clip.

    “Nubian” is someone from “Nubia.”

“Nubia” is a somewhat vaguely-defined region south of ancient Egypt (Which was itself rather vaguely-defined), primarily in what is now moder-day Sudan. It was one of Africa’s earliest civilizations, and eventually began to be used poetically to refer to Black Africa and Black African Civilization as a whole. (As opposed to Arab African)

So now you know. And Knowing is half the battle.

    Geeeeeeeee eyeeeeeee Joeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  • OK, R3 didn’t get the reference. Next…?

  • I think not. If you’re not going to take the time to explain it, it couldn’t be very imporant anyway, right?

  • OK, who pissed in R3’s cornflakes today?

You’re right, though. It’s not that important.

    Pssssttttt… Don’t mention Kwanzaa around R3. That’ll really get him going…

  • The question is, are the Nubians nubile?

  • I’m not sure what direction Eric comes from on the topic. I get why they did it, I get the purpose it fulfilled, but I think it was kind of slapped together, should have been overhauled by now, and celebrates cultural dealies that have no relation to the heritage of 99% of American blacks.

The only aspect of it that bugs me, however, is the perception that it’s an ancient African celebration, when it was actually created in Oakland, California, in, what, 1968? It also bothers me when it develops religious connotations.

Those are all reasons why I said it’s a bit of an open secret that it’s bullshit. It’s presented in an intentionally deceptive way, with the implication that it is some sort of reconstructed and authentic holiday, when it actively borrows elements from Hanukkah and the named virtues from Chivalry, with a few trappings from a better known African culture. Moreover, by attempting to create a homogenized pan-African holiday, it does a disservice to history and individual cultural heritages.

If a true black American holiday were founded, you would have to take into account that much of black culture is post-African; a unique mixture of regional and Western influences that emerged from a shared experience in America.

  • I want the month of March to be named as German History Month. I think that March is the most aptly named month to cover German history.
