I want the month of March to be named as German History Month. I think that March is the most aptly named month to cover German history.

Those are all reasons why I said it’s a bit of an open secret that it’s bullshit. It’s presented in an intentionally deceptive way, with the implication that it is some sort of reconstructed and authentic holiday, when it actively borrows elements from Hanukkah and the named virtues from Chivalry, with a few trappings from a better known African culture. Moreover, by attempting to create a homogenized pan-African holiday, it does a disservice to history and individual cultural heritages.

If a true black American holiday were founded, you would have to take into account that much of black culture is post-African; a unique mixture of regional and Western influences that emerged from a shared experience in America.

I’m not sure what direction Eric comes from on the topic. I get why they did it, I get the purpose it fulfilled, but I think it was kind of slapped together, should have been overhauled by now, and celebrates cultural dealies that have no relation to the heritage of 99% of American blacks.

The only aspect of it that bugs me, however, is the perception that it’s an ancient African celebration, when it was actually created in Oakland, California, in, what, 1968? It also bothers me when it develops religious connotations.
