There is chaos in the streets of Tehran, as protesters gathered to condemn the oppressive, evil regime that runs Iran. And so, in the great tradition of American Presidents, Barack Hussein Obama – despite being on vacation in his alleged birthplace of Hawaii – stepped up to the plate to condemn the government that he has spent the better part of the last six months trying to play footsie with. Just listen:
Strong stuff, eh? Reminiscent of Reagan standing up for Solidarity. Ah what miracles hath been wrought in the cause of freedom! What stirring words have been uttered for liberty’s sake!
OK, enough of that – I’m making myself naseous. What was actually said – not by the President of course, but by U.S. National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer – was that the United States condemns Iran’s “…unjust suppression of civilians”. “Unjust suppression.” Sounds like some kind of legal nuance, doesn’t it? Perhaps we should get the ACLU involved.
The bastards are murdering protesters, arresting protesters and locking protesters up in make-shift prisons where they are beaten, killed and, should they be so unlucky to be born female, raped. That’s a little more than “unjust suppression” in my book, but maybe that’s just me.
The Leader of the Free World and Presumptive Galactic Emporer cozies up to these clowns because – in this glorious new age – that’s the way we will convince them to put away their nuclear toys and make nice with Israel. Ahmadinejad and the mullahs spit in his face every time and he keeps coming back for more. No doubt the Supreme Leader of Iran will, once again, tell the Supreme Leader of the United States to mind his own damn business and stop all of this arrogant, dangerous “unjust suppression” rhetoric. And, equally undoubtedly, the Prez will break out the lube and bend over obligingly for Ahmadinejad once again.
I used to think that Obama was merely naive when it comes to foriegn policy. At this point, I’m becoming more and more convinced that the man is stupid. Dangerously stupid in fact. I swear it’s like watching a remake of “Being There” sometimes.
Of course according to Andrew Sullivan, the world is lucky to have “Obama’s reticence” at this critical moment because by not criticizing the obscene Iranian regime, our President “removes from Ahmadinejad the convenient weapon of demonizing the protests as pawns of the Great Satan.” This absurd logic led to this gem that jumped of the pen of Peter Collier, over at Front Page:
Take a moment to get this straight: it’s a good thing we have a president who, to keep himself pure for that ultimate negotiation on nukes that will never come, refrains from using some of that synthetic eloquence of his to put us on the side of people who are getting cut down in the streets.
Did Lars mention something about this being the Post-Ironic Age?

Marc Ambinder at the Atlantic believed Obama’s lack of comment was “strategy,” and the only ones upset are the wingnut conservatives. Obama’s deftness may put a smile on the face of Ambinder, but I imagine there might be some protesters upset over the Speechy one’s lack of speech at a critical moment. I get the feeling if the wall fell during Obama’s time in office, he would send a trillion in aid to help rebuild it.
Obamy has not spoken on Iran while in Hawaii because he can’t take the time away from his travels around the islands making sure they all have their stories straight regarding his “birthplace facts!”
Lazy bum couldn’t even put on a tie…oh,and I love the way he mentioned Yemen, where he wants to send all of these Gitmo terrorists
He vows to use POWER:

Rich,
You summed up my thoughts exactly, albeit more eloquently. I think one of the most overlooked news stories of this year, and perhaps one of the most significant, was President Obama’s complete bungling of the Iranian uprising last summer.
