Tom Brookshier, former Philadelphia Eagles DB and CBS football broadcaster died last Friday of cancer at age 78. Before it was John Madden-Pat Summerall it was Tom Brookshier and Pat Summerall through Super Bowl XIV. Another part of childhood in the 1970s passes with Mr. Brookshier. Saturdays belonged to Keith Jackson and Vern Lundquist for college football and Sundays — since the Cowboys were NFC and CBS had NFC games — belonged to Brent Musberger, Irv Cross, Phyllis George , and Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder” for pregame talk and when that circus got to be a bit much the strong, experienced, and humorous presence of Brookshier-Summerall narrated many a Sunday afternoon in Grandpa Turbo’s house after church and Sunday lunch. I’m not a Madden hater, but I’m glad I had Tom Brookshier to be there for a few days of my formative years and some pretty great memories of 1970s pro football.
