God knows I didn’t agree with the guy on damned near anything (plus he’s a Pitt grad), but fellow Pennsylvanians still. Rest in peace, Mr. Murtha, and may He have mercy on your soul.

Well said EP. RIP Mr. Murtha.

  • Since this is an open thread, I now pause briefly from the Murtha-talk, to announce great news from the Warner Bros. camp: Desperate Journey finally being released on DVD!!! Patience, it truly is a virtue…

Eric, Will it be sold as a single disc or with a box set? Or will it be sold only through Warner’s Archives online?

      • If the past few archival releases like the Charlie Chan catalog are any indication, at minimum it’ll be on DVD in the US, Canada and Mexico. I work in international dubbing and subtitling, but I’ll do some digging with the domestic department to confirm.

My guess is also little to no bonus materials beyond the trailer, but that can change, though I highly doubt anything beyond a single disc. Objective Burma got announced today, too.

Hey Eric, just downloaded some Replacements albums. I got Tim, Let it Be, Hootenanny, and Sorry Ma Forgot to Take Out the Trash. Which one is the best to start with?

    • First, thanks for asking — flattered I most certainly am. Most will say Let It Be, but I’m not in that category (though the remastered edition has me judging it more reverently than I had for years). I started with Pleased to Meet Me, but in lieu of that and in a rare move for me, someone who hates greatest hits sequenced chronologically, with what you’ve got, I’d say go with Sorry Ma…, Hootenanny, Let It Be, Tim. Hearing the band, who apparently hated their lead singer’s desire to tap into his poppier/sappier side, tolerate Westerberg’s maturation as a songwriter, which considering “Johnny’s Gonna Die” is amongst the fast & loud stuff on Sorry Ma… is saying something, never fails to impress me.

Also, I’m guessing you’re dealing with the remasters. If you aren’t, snag those tunes, too. If you are, and you like what you hear, go with PTMM and Stink next. Great b-sides on both of those, including what’s become my favorite version of “Route 66″ (barely edging out Jesus and Mary Chain’s) on the latter and phee-frikkin’-nomenal takes on “Hey, Good Lookin’” and “Rock Around the Clock” on the latter.

    Awaiting Moderation?

Threedonia is an oppressive regime!!! Bushitler!!! McCarthyism!!!

  • I’ll relate a story about Benedict Arnold. This is not to suggest that Murtha’s perfidy was comparable to Arnold’s, but it does express, to some extent, my feelings about a military hero who sold his soul.

The story goes that Benedict Arnold, in retirement in England, met an American. He asked him, “What do you suppose would happen if I were to go home for a visit?”

The American replied, “We’d cut off your leg that was wounded at Saratoga, and bury it will full military honors. Then we’d hang the rest of you.”

Mr. Murtha should rest with honors in recognition of his military service, but his political legacy ought to go to the gallows.

So, I’d thought I a bit of sunshine on the policy front. GOP Rep. Paul Ryan has cooked up a “Roadmap for America’s Future” and it sounds pretty good. George Will covers it in a WaPo op-ed.

    Some highlights:

–The deficit is wiped out by 2050.
–Social Security and Medicare are made permanently solvent.
–Eliminates taxes on interest, capital gains, dividends and death.
–Replaces current tax code with the “postcard” flat tax.
–Appears to avoid the third rail.

    Me likey :-)

Ace of Spades also covered it.

There is absolutely no way to make Social Security and Medicare solvent. What I want is someone to have the sack to step up and say:

“These entitlement should have never been born into a country built on a free market and love of liberty but they are here. It is now our duty to phase these out responsibly without harming those who have paid into and come to depend on them. This will not be painless and will not be quick but if our country is to survive and if our children and grand children have any hope of being born without carrying the financial burden of our errors than we must act now, and we must act convincingly.”

      That’d be my candidate.

      • You are that candidate, n’est-ce pas?

(That’s right, our President doesn’t even talk the talk about speaking a foreign language, but I can BS my way through three … and, yes, that does include English).

      • David Marcoe

Apparently, the number check out, as calculated by the CBO. But if you want the details, read the report (PDF).

        • David Marcoe

The way the plan is structured, it essentially packages more modest versions of several popular reform ideas into a single integrated plan: private retirement accounts, medical savings accounts, insurance across state lines, and flat tax. It doesn’t attempt to make Medicare and SS solvent using their current structure.

How about simply saying the government cannot use social security for anything OTHER than paying for social security?

I have a question about the “postcard” flat tax:

What is income? Doesn’t the flat tax tax income? My understanding is the flat tax is a non-progressive income tax with a much lower rate than the current tiers. Flat tax proponents give a rebate to those who earn under a certain level, to make sure the poor don’t have to bear an unfair burden (and that makes it a little progressive), but over a certain level everyone pays the same, low-ish rate (15%?).

I don’t dislike that. I think it’s better than what we have today, but I don’t understand why the rich simply won’t find ways to hide their income. And when they do Congress will have to write tax code that codifies their crimes, which means there will have to be disclosure forms that we fill out, and those won’t fit on a post-card, and, in rather short order we’re back where we are today.

      Anyone know the details?

  • I’m sorry for his family. I’m sure he treated some people well and only God knows what was in his soul, but his external presence was a negative for well over 30 years — verifiably corrupt and anti-American. I won’t pretend to mourn for him.

  • Veruckt

Amen Floyd. I shed no tears for criminals like him and make no mistake the man was a criminal. Good riddance. Hope it’s hot enough. This seems to be the only way we can get these lifetime crooks out of our government, quick someone go put some lead paint and asbestos in Nancy Pelosi’s office!

  • Scott M.

“I won’t pretend to mourn for him.” Well said,Floyd. The only thing that makes me sorry about this old Copperhead croaking is that those brave Marines who sued him for slander won’t get the chance to face him in court. At least a small part of Pennsylvania will be well manured.

  • Stephanie

I am refraining than saying anything other than RIP Jack Murtha….

  • Scott M.

I spoke ill of this SOB when he was alive, and I’ll speak ill of him when he is food for worms…don’t let the door hit ya where the Lord split ya,bastard Jack!

  • David Marcoe

I say that if all you can do is speak ill of the dead, don’t speak at all; the worst insult an enemy can suffer is to be ignored.

  • Scott M.

Well,David,I spoke ill of him when he was alive (as did most every other Threedonian),so I can damn well speak ill of him when he is dead.

  • Scott M.

No,David,I’m just a stupid West Tennessee redneck…maybe in your leisure you can explain irony to me

    • David Marcoe

No, David, I’m just a stupid West Tennessee redneck…

Thank you for that brave admission. We forgive you.

…maybe in your leisure you can explain irony to me.

Are you sure you wouldn’t rather start a little simpler, like arithmetic, or just counting on your fingers?

Relax, I was asking because I honestly didn’t know if you mistook what I said and was making sure I wasn’t coming off as sanctimonious; I only have your text to work off of and was trying to avoid a misunderstanding. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve gotten into trouble because I misread someone or missed something they had said, I would be able to make a sizable dent in our national deficit.

  • I hadn’t heard he had died. Reading the headline of the piece, I don’t know why he will be considered a military advocate. His actions proved otherwise, and his veteran status equaled that of John Kerry. Exaggerated and a way to get votes.
    I won’t pretend either.

  • Scott M.

Accept my apology,David…sometimes the the vodka outruns my brain

  • Scott M.

    Substitute “usually” for “sometimes”..
