  • Loved the dynamite scene with Jack and Richard. From the way Jack was acting, he is either (a) finally starting to discover his purpose on the island, or (b) losing his mind.

I haven’t kept up with the show since, well, it began, but thanks to Hulu I did watch a few episodes and am gradually getting into it.

I was struck though tonight they showed a re-broadcast before the new episode (which I did not watch), but I came in on the middle of it.

is there a reason they put up plot points on screen like they’re subtitles or something?

  • well if Linus is Judas he has yet to kill himself in despair… they really made Jacob sound Christ-like last night though I doubt the payoff will be any sort of orthodox Christian view.

I wonder what Widmore’s role is…. it almost seemed that un-Locke is trying to recruit folks to leave heaven… like Lucifer taking 1/3 of the angels with him in rebellion.

there are 6 Candidates left… are they “the elect”…. if this is all a dream of a little kid in Pooughkeepsie I’m going to strafe my local mall.

both linus and widmore talked about ‘rules’ — as did jacob and anti-jacob/man-in-black/unlocke/smoke monster, i believe. when alex was shot, ben said ‘he changed the rules’ – jacob was killed indirectly by aj/mib/ul/sm through a loophole in the rules. dunno what that is.

apparently, the lighthouse showed the name on 108 as wallace – and contributors to lostpedia are wondering if widmore is wallace, since jacob was referring to 108 coming to the island, the position hurley was directed to turn the lighthouse to (although it seemed jacob was actually much more interested in keeping jack and hurley away from the temple than actually doing anything at the lighthouse).

(if they go the dream route, maybe they could work in the endings to dallas, st. elsewhere and newhart)

      • I don’t see how Widmore can be Wallace. With everybody else, it’s their last name that’s used. I think whoever Wallace is, Jacob didn’t want him to come to the island, which was why it was important that Jack go with Hurley, to smash the lighthouse.

    Ok a few thoughts:

    - Richard has clearly lost his faith in Jacob, but he was unwilling to join up with Smokey. I am curious about where his character is going but would settle for just a backstory

    - Illana said there are 6 candidates, but she has not been privy to some recent developments. So she must be talking about Jack, Hurley, Jin/Sun, Sawyer, Sayid, and…who? Or is she counting Jin and Sun separately? Only one of them is a candidate but she doesn’t know which one so that could be.

-What is Kate’s role? If she’s not a candidate does that mean she ends up on Smokey’s posse, or does she have a larger part to play still?

in the cave – locke was shown, not crossed out. he’d make six.

apparently kate was a candidate: “While Kate Austen was not seen to be one of the candidates, Carlton Cuse said in a 2010 Paley Fest interview that her name does appear on the wall crossed out, making her a former candidate, and he apologized for the footage not making the final cut.” — (see prior link on cave)

I think the flash sideways are influencing what is happening on the island. Illana said she wanted Ben on her team and then when Ben goes back to the beach nobody seems to care that he is there. His choice in the flash sideways to let the principal keep his job influenced his decision to not kill Illana. Does this make sense? I would think there would have been a negative reaction towards Ben on the beach but they all accepted Ben.

The dynamite scene was great. I was hoping Jack was a goner but I still liked the outcome.

I think you may be right about the influence, but as to not responding to Ben, that actually seems the most natural response. They all know who he is, to one extent or another, and have some idea of what he’s done; he’s a known quantity, especially since he’s in the same boat as they are. They are tattered remnants, regrouping and trying to survive. Punishing Ben for crimes and sins too numerous to count, when he isn’t an immediate threat, is just a waste of time and life, with all the deaths that have already occurred. Besides, in accepting Illana’s leadership, they are taking her lead in how he’s treated.

lostpedia says this about the flash-sideways: It has been stated by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse on the Official Lost Podcast (February 22nd 2010) that the flash-sideways is NOT an alternative timeline, and that the two timelines are not mutually exclusive.

  • My favorite episode of the season so far. This is the first time the “sideways story” was as compelling to me as the on-island happenings. We get a look at how Ben might have grown up with a father who gave a damn about him.

The power-play at the school could give us a sense of what happened on the island when Ben ousted Widmore. Widmore ends up murdering Alex. Here, with a conscience, Ben makes a different choice and sacrifices his own ambitions to ensure Alex’s happiness. (Oh, and I checked Tania Raymonde’s IMBD page and she’s old enough to say: YOWZA!)

Nice callback to—I’ve forgotten their names. Nicki and Paolo? The diamond thieves. I liked the offhand way Miles tells Ben he knows where he can get $8 million dollars. (Sure beats the chump change he used to steal from dead drug dealers.)

Emerson really nailed Ben’s confrontation with Ilana. I’d have forgiven him, too. His eyes are magnificent tools.

Does the gift of Jacob’s touch always include immortality?

It struck me last night that when a character trusts his destiny, like Jack with the dynamite, you could make the case that he’s surrendering to predetermination. If both sides have complete faith in their destiny, where is the free will?

    • If both sides have complete faith in their destiny, where is the free will?

Ah, but that’s the question of the ages… and the paradox (not contradiction I believe) of Scripture — and perhaps this show…. if Jacob is outside of time like God then a system is set up where folks still make choices in time…. ah heck… it’s still a mystery.

      • Given Jacob’s evident precognition, that’s probably the way to look at it. God makes it easier on us by not telling us exactly what we’ll do and what the results will be. If I knew, I’d blab for sure.

This has gotten me thinking about last season’s episode when Jack refused to treat teenaged Ben. He knew Ben would survive, because “whatever happened, happened,” but his choice affected himself, if nothing else. (That may have been Jack’s way of testing out the whole ‘destiny’ idea.)

you catch the brief shot of miles holding a diamond after ben and illi-”when-did-i-become-such-an-important-character”-ana returned?

    • dr. zoon

emerson is genius. he did a cameo on the soup a few weeks ago – he even nailed that

      • Believe it or not, I’ve heard a rumor of a Locke/Linus spinoff following the alternate timeline. They’re roommates! I hope they solve crimes together after school.
