There should be nothing but unalloyed anticipation for tonight’s premiere of The Pacific, thank you Tom Hanks for ruining that. I’m mostly optimistic.

What’s infuriating about Hanks’ comments is that he old enough to know better, and old enough to have known plenty of WW2 vets as a child/ young adult and have a proper perspective.
When Saving Private Ryan came out people bestowed upon him the mantle of Grand Nagus of WW2 histoire and trusted him (and Spielberg) with the honor of preserving the proper context, memory and history of those events.
A proff talking about this yesterday on FOX called it “presententism” which means he is looking at the past through his own view point rather than honoring it by accepting the history on its merits. He is a creep. I am gonna wait to get this thing on DVD or blue ray…sigh……..
I’m watching it tonight and will blog about it after.
Stephanie… Same here. I’m not paying for HBO (or any other premium channels on cable) when I have NetFlix.
And I have this same argument quite frequently regarding history and 20/20 hindsight. Especially with the Civil War period. Some fellow starts rambling about how General so-and-so should have done this or that. It’s completely unfair, and revisionist history at it’s worst.
My point to them is always the same: Judge the actions by using the information they had available to them at the time. Look at their orders, the intelligence they had access to, the terrain they were formed on, etc. Only then can you make a valid judgement about their actions. All this “Custer died for your sins” crap needs to end. It poisons factual history with fallacious moralizing and politics, and does a disservice not only to the past, but to the future who will have to wade through all the modern BS to uncover the truth.
respects,
Well said.
Amen!
What pains me is this: My Mom knew a kid at Pearl Harbor. My husband’s Uncle flew P-40′s in the Pacific and another was in the Army with MacArthur. My uncle was a Marine. And of course my hubby who is a Marine…..Hanks makes this show and then poos all over all of them with his stupidity and ignorance. When my husband was stationed at Parris Island, they were making Forrest Gump. Hanks had the rep at the time of being a very nice guy. What the hell happened to him? Has his ego gotten him? He isn’t the same guy who made that movie. Its hard for me to imagine Gary Sinese who never forgot what that movie meant to the vets who fought in Vietnam fitting in well with Hanks anymore. Has Hanks even been overseas to visit the guys? No. What an arrogant obnoxious tool.
Sure hindsight said Roosevelt probably never should have had the internment camps but thats ignoring the national will at the time. How can he square FDR and his hate for W who wouldn’t have hurt a fly when it came to so called peace loving American muslims? See that sticks in my craw.
Gary Sinise needs to stage an intervention for Hanks, pronto. I also pray my Marine grandfather, who fought at Iwo Jima, isn’t rolling in his grave too much.
Steph… I imagine Sinise and Hanks hang out with very different folks. Hanks probably has no one who really challenges his worldview. I doubt he does much pontificating in front of all of those WW2 vets other than to say “thanks” and listen to their stories. I wonder if he even engages them seriously or if he sits there silently and patronizingly listens to them thinking they are racist anachronisms… brave and all, but really not as progressed as he is.
Spielberg and Hanks had a private viewing for the president. Awwwwwwww, wasn’t that nice? Perhaps the president came out with a different view of what the military does. Something besides what he’s learned from Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, the nightly news, and anti-war activists.
In defense of Hanks, sort of, spatterings in the news show he’s been supportive of WWII vets in the U.S. since the Private Ryan days.
I’ll wait for Floyd’s comments about The Pacific.
Steph-
I have a deep admiration of anyone flying the WWII planes. Those planes were awesome, especially the fighters.
I wouldn´t have watched it because of Hanks and I´m not going to miss it because of Hanks. But thanks to his idiot remarks now I will be expecting some low blow, some suckerpunch. They brought in some writers I´m not sure about…
Christian Toto gave it a very positive review… I think he saw all the episodes. That made me feel better.
I’m watching Raid on Entebbe on Fox Movie Channel… TV movie from 1977… the talent is amazing! Martin Balsam, Charles Bronson, Yaphet Kotto, James Wood, Robert Loggia, Jack Warden and the MIGHTY John Saxon… and they even used stock NBC news footage with John Chancellor…. it’s pro-Israel and was on prime time. It’s very good.
Just got my power back on. We had some wind up here the likes of which I’ve never seen. 30-50 mph for a full day. A big tree fell on my parents’ house (no one hurt, but a lot of damage) that actually knocked pictures off their walls.
