I owned a ’71 Mustang. Best damned car I ever owned. i could work on it. I could pop the hood and not need and A&P license to work on it. Mine was a Mustang Grande with a Dark brown leather top and a mid-brown body, with a brown leather interior.
I got the 302 Windsor rather than the 351 Cleveland so I could work on the motor without having to jack it up out of the frame. First thing I did was take it to Sears and have air shocks installed. Then I purchased Cragar Street Super trick wheels, 15″ wide rims on the back and 14″ thin rims for the front. After that I added and Edelbrock hi-rise manifold with a new Holley 4-barrel carb. Accel ignition harness, and dual-point racing distributor and coil. Then i added gold-anodized Moroso air filter and quick-release valve covers, Black Jack headers, and Doug Thorley Show pipes (4 into 1) along the sides. Lastly was a nitrous-injection system, which meant i had to cut the hood and put on a scoop.
She was a fine ride. The one over-riding regret in my life was listening to “she who must be obeyed” who said we needed a “family” car. I put her up for sale and waited.
Some kid came along with a wad of cash and took her away. I had told him to go easy with her, as she could accelerate like no one’s business, but he didn’t listen. Less than two weeks later he wrapped it around a phone pole. I wa sick for days over that.
Sigh…
I mentioned this on the other Mustang thread, but my first car was a ’70 Mustang Grande 302. It had the brown vinyl top with the disco trim, which was a special option out of a Florida dealer. C-4 auto, interior had the houndstooth buckets. Not the prettiest thing but it was a first gen Mustang and it was a factory freak. The engine was stock, outside some tuning, and I’d easily smoke the local 305 and 350 Camaros and Firebirds.
Eventually I threw on a Ford factory four-barrel intake off a ’65 289 GT, added a Holley 600 CFM carb, Hooker headers with Flowmasters and duals out the back.
I had it on shocks for a while at a friend’s barn, getting the tranny rebuilt and a shift-kit put in. While it was up, one of the control arms separated from the subframe. I couldn’t find anyone to weld it back on, so I was stuck with no car, so two days later I picked up a ’91 LX 5.0 hatch.
I’m now on my third Mustang, which is currently rotting in the garage with 200,000 miles on it.
And always beware of kids with wads of cash. I had dozens try to buy my ’70 from me. I’d never sell it because I couldn’t take the thought of it being upside down in some cornfield somewhere.
You want to know the absolutely best thing about the Mustang? The ’67-70 models provided the chassis, running gear, and other mechanicals for the Mercury Cougar! The Cougar was marketed as the luxury version of the Mustang, and as the proud owner of a first gen Cougar, I can say without a doubt it is a nicer car than a standard Mustang form the same year.
How about that for a homer attitude?
Oh, 67Cougar is a car! All this time I thought you were an older, single woman, on the prowl for young men
Me too, Rufus!
It’s no secret I like Mustangs.
Even the track people thought I was crazy putting it on the track.

And to think Ford created this car in ’64 primarily for women.
That’s ok. I’ll talk my wife into some track time.
The Mustang is an American classic, even if you are a Camaro fan you still owe Ford because without the Mustang there would be no Camaro, Firebird or any other muscle car of that ilk from the late 60′s early 70′s.
I owned a 77 blue Mustang II for a while…not a good era for the pony car. I’ve made up for it by buying a Black ’03 SVT Mustang, which is a totally awesome car. I can’t tell you how bad ass that car is.
If you ever want it tweaked, Outlaw, give me a shout.
