I’ve played an NCAA bracket every year since 1990, when my beloved Runnin’ Rebels led by Larry Johnson and Stacey Augmon won it all. In that time, I had never lost more than five games in one day. Yesterday – I lost seven. Another reason, when I gamble, I stick primarily to football.
Go Bobcats, go. You could have been my alma mater.

My bracket is not fairing well either. I bought into the UTEP and Siena hype.
With today’s completed games, I have nine losses and I’m losing one more, but it’s in the first half.
What hurt me the most was Richmond. I had Richmond as a Sweet 16. Along with the Spiders, I had Marquette, Temple as as Sweet 16, and Texas. My wife, inexplicably, picked Vandy for the Final Four – I was almost divorced last night.
once Murray St beat Vanderbilt, all bets were off.
That – is true.
I am proud that I picked the Murray St., Old Dominion, St. Mary’s, and Cornell upsets. But I had Siena and UTEP going to the Sweet 16. That really boned me.
Those are some damn good upset picks. I take it you pick a lot of upsets if you have Siena and UTEP in the Sweet 16?
Yeah, a couple of years ago I just started going for it. Looking at my bracket now I’m actually not in as bad a shape as I thought I was, but I’m not sitting pretty either. I need the games going on right now to break my way or I’m going to be in the hole big time.
Right now I have nine losses with three games to go. Ohio State is a 2 and Syracuse is a 1, so they should be safe. Maryland is a 4 playing a 12. With the way the last two days have gone, who knows.
Somehow through this disaster, I’ve only lost two Sweet 16 teams. It was surreal going to the newsstand this morning and seeing an Ohio University basketball player on the front page of USA Today.
i picked washington over marquette, missouri over clemson, but that’s it as far as upsets. other risks didn’t pay off (i _almost_ got fla over byu – 2OT – but no) — especially my very cocky claim for the longhorns to rejuvenate their high level of play earlier in the season and make it all the way to the championship. but it’s no fun playing it safe
8 losses so far … go ga tech!
(“upsets” == lame upsets)
Texas screwed me, too. I can’t remember a team falling as far as they have in a season – they went from No. 1 in the poll, to an eight seed, to getting booted in the first round.
I wonder how much talk there will be next year about the Big East being the best conference. They would have been 0-4 on Thursday if
THE REFSVillanova hadn’t pulled it out in overtime.Ugh, I hate watching a score go your way and then realizing you picked the loser. I thought I had Gonzaga over FSU. Nope, just the opposite. What the hell was I thinking.
My ex-boss played Division II college ball, was a star in high school. He was a college basketball junkie and played around 10 to 20 bracket pools every year and he won thousands. He knew the teams and knew the game. His piece de resistance was the 1992 tournament – he won the big local pool with 400 other guys and he clinched it when Duke nipped Kentucky on the Laettner buzzer beater – that was an Elite Eight game. There was still two rounds and a week to go and he had already won. Not a bad way to get $3,000.
I lost 10 games form Round One. No too shabby… damn the Texas LOnghorns and Notre Dame.. and Vanderbilt. I’d be in first place in my bracket challenge if those teams had come through — and Georgetown.
go buckeyes
This is the first time in many moons I did not fill out a bracket. Like a canary in the coal mine, I caught a whiff of what was coming. Even in years with a strong field I usually end up competing for the last place prize, so I knew this year I might do so so badly that my family would insist on an intervention. So instead, I deposited my dollar with the bum at the intersection with the sign “out of work – God bless”. I know, an equal waste of money, but at least this way I won’t be up a midnight cursing at the TV and wearing out a pen scratching out an entire regional bracket.
and … bye-bye villanova — doesn’t hurt me too much as i had them out in the next round anyway – but … bleh.
