Classical Gas followed by the Flight of the Bumblebee! I remember Jim Stafford as a sort of “Ray Stevens” sort of guy; but, like Ray, he’s got a lot more talent than you’ll hear in his recorded music.
Stafford was always very talented. Great on the guitar, and a pretty funny man comedically as well.
Johnny Carson weilded a lot of power in Hollywood. If he liked your performance on his show, your career was made.
Sidebar note: the audience knew how to be an audience back then. No hoots and whoots while he was playing. Just a big honkin’ well-deserved ovation at the end.
I’m reminded of a line in a Bryan Adams sing – “…played it ’til my fingers bled.” MAN!
Uh, that would be SONG – sheesh!
Don’t be so hard on yourself…we knew what you meant.
As I’ve said many times: I miss Johnny. Any idea what year this was? Looks like mid 70s. Thanks for posting this!
I’d forgotten along with “Spiders and Snakes” (used to sing it in the car with my daddy-o!) that Jim Stafford is that talented on the guitar. I, too, remember him more for his comedic songs. And being cute. He made my prepubescent heart go pitter-pat!
He’s in Branson, MO now and has a lot of YouTube stuff up… Smothers Bros. Mike Douglas, Johnny Carson, etc. I forget how much he was in demand back then.
Hey Kenn: Would it be okay to put your quote on Jim’s website? We like to share comments (only the good stuff of course) about Jim. http://news.jimstafford.com and Floyd if it’s okay with you we’ll link over to this page and share it with Jim’s fans…? Thanks, Cindy Merry from Jim Stafford’s marketing team.
No problem Cindy… love Jim and have fond memories of him as a child of the 1970s. My in-laws saw him in Branson a few years ago and raved. Glad he’s doing well and that you guys have allowed all those great clips on You Tube for embeds…. Cow Patti still makes me laugh out loud.
Me too! My favorite famous song of Jim’s is Swamp Witch but…when you see him playing live on the classical guitar it blows you away. And he still makes me laugh to this day even though I’ve worked with him for twenty years… Thanks for the mention of Jim and come see the show some time!
