This was meant to be a Mother’s Day post, but I blew it.
Here’s Five Things You Didn’t Know About…My Mom. You can make it Five Things We Didn’t Know About [Insert your family member here].
5. She’s tough: She’s coming back, week by week, from open-heart surgery. And when I was a kid, she fell off a stepladder and shattered the bones in her forearm so badly they had to wire them together with something called an “appliance”. Bad enough. But after they removed it, she had to learn to write again. Her perfect, copperplate handwriting had disappeared. It took her almost a year. She got it back.
4. She knows birthdays are important: Because hers is December 26th, and it was never celebrated on that day when she was growing up. So she made a point to make a big deal out of mine. And my brother’s. To this day, I make a big deal out of mine. And hers. And everyone else’s. She was who inspired the 3D/Bday Threads.
3. Her looks are deceiving!: As a teen she resembled Jeanne Crain. As wife and mom, she epitomizes Nice Middle-Class Lady. But she was always smarter than her 20- & 30-something bosses. When they were in trouble, they’d call her. She’d come in, read the computer screen, tap a few keys…hey presto! problem solved.
2. She’s got big brass ones: She was a small-town girl who met a Nice Young Man from the Middle East. In 1960. In the face of small-town opposition, and a minister who had to be bribed (and, I think, threatened!), she married him. Years later, the woman who’d never ventured far from where she grew up flew halfway around the world, alone, to visit her Peace Corps Volunteer daughter.
1. She has faith: In God. In her friends. In her family. I once asked, How can you forgive me, Mother? She said, after a moment’s surprised silence, Because He forgave.
Love you, Mom.

“small-town opposition”?
Can you elaborate?
it’s 1960 Kit… the math ain’t hard.
Excellent news on your mom’s post-surgery recovery. Believe the word I’m looking for is “Yay!!!!”
It’s good to know more about you and your family. Sounds like you are all special people!
“small-town opposition”?
Can you elaborate?
Perhaps they objected to his passion for the dance?
I think they were probably in opposition to his passion to build rockets and leave the coal mine.
Re #1…you gotta have faith!
Like that cast list, Wanks! You certainly have great taste in the man-flesh (or at least taste that mirrors my own – which is, of course, great).
Your mom sounds like an awesome lady. I am glad she is continuing to improve and hope to makes another full recovery.
Go, Momma Wanks! Thanks for sharing this with us. I’ve wondered about her and how her recovery is going. Bless her and bless her daughter. Give her my best.
Yaaa for your Mom Wanks! Love your cast ideas to!
“I once asked, How can you forgive me, Mother?”
My imagination is running away with me trying to think of what you needed forgiveness for.
