Tom Petty = The Man (ditto his Heartbreakers)

Just when you think you’ve seen it all from the usually boneheaded entertainment community, someone and his band surprise you in all the best ways. In short, and giving credit where it is most assuredly due, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rock!!!!

Despite his strange affection for hanging out with and musically associating with ELO’s Jeff Lynne, AKA the luckiest musician on the planet (he gets to hang out with and swim in the wake of Dylan, Petty and, before their sad passings, Roy Orbison and George Harrson?!? The humanity.), I’ve always considered myself a 100 percent Tom Petty fan. Great tunes, phenomenal live shows and even threw a nod to Paul Westerberg by co-opting the “rebel without a clue” line from “I’ll Be You” into “Into the Great Wide Open.”

Now, however, I need to place Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers into the rarified air of rock and roll godliness. Why? Do that clicking thing here to find out.

Tom Petty seems like a good guy. He’s written a ton of decent music, seems to be a hard-working, sincere artist…but the guy just never clicked with me. I have no idea why. On paper it all seems like something I would like but when I hear his music I just kind-of go, “eh.”

  • TP is an awesome showman, anyone who has seen him play a show could tell you. Love the early stuff most (old story) with the jangly guitars and the contorted vocal. Saw him once with Nick Lowe as the opening act. Best double bill I ever saw. As a guitar player of very limited skills I think part of Petty’s charm for me was it was music I could duplicate pretty well from records when I tried. But of course I discovered this already because I like the music. Chicken or egg? Anyway, from what I’ve heard of him, I’m not suprised to see his heart is in the right place.

  • Nick Lowe? Niiiiice. Aside from the 4 times I saw TP with the ‘Mats opening, the Del Fuegos/Georgia Satellites/TP triple bill on the Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough) tour ranks pretty damn high. Ahhh, Pine Knob…
