Just when I think it’s time to pack up the Pontiac and move further from Beverly (Hills, that is) than Burbank, I get a small reminder of some of the Hollywood-esque perks I’d be missing. Case in point this time: the recent bi-annual charity sale the Warner Music Group holds, allowing the local Warner Bros. offices to partake of some of the label’s excess booty at dirt-cheap prices, with proceeds this time going to the damn fine Kaboom!.
I get to feed my insatiable music addiction courtesy my favorite label, snag some Clapton t-shirts and Depeche Mode for milady, and get my folks and in-laws some classic rock and R&B catalog releases. It’s win-win-win-win for all involved, though said milady has a valid point as to where we’re going to find room for the new additions to the family, notably the boxed sets (mmm, ZZ Top’s Chrome, Smoke & BBQ).
Now for the Marshall Stack-packaged catch o’ the day, and also where I’ll need your help, fellow Threedonians: The Heavy Metal Box, four discs of ear-splintering hard rock and metal classics, covering the genre’s formative years through the glorious 70s and 80s and early 90s (1991 to be specific; i.e. the year Nirvana’s Nevermind and grunge, to bum from the set’s liner notes, “ushered into the mainstream a new punk-oriented music of disaffection”).
Like any great boxed set, though, due to licensing issues and/or bands not wanting to participate, there are some key MIA acts. However, when it comes to assembling a fifth disc, those technicalities go the way of the dodo Kingdom Come. So, with your able assistance, I supply the bands, you fill in some song suggestions, please. Throw in some bands I may miss if you want, too. The blank CD awaits and its fate is in your hands …

whoops! Steph… I’d rather do “Three Lock Box” from Hagar’s solo career…
Noted and in total agreement (though “Source of Infection” is a pretty rockin’ VH tune).
That’s it… We Care A Lot over Epic — which is great too.
Just fill the whole collection full of Black Sabbath tracks and that would be fine by me…
Pagan.
Heh……. I stand guilty as charged.

Love that list, Stephanie! I’ll have to play some of the good stuff after the kids are in bed tonight.

And it isn’t a “heavy metal box set” without these bands.
Pantera
Sepultura
Slayer
Anthrax
Motorhead
Metallica pre-1991
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Has anyone looked at the list under the “four discs of ear-splintering hard rock and metal classics” hyperlink? All these bands accounted for there, including two each from Maiden and Priest (and, no, no 1991- Metallica
). There’s even Lemmy’s Hawkwind represented. Also, Def Leppard pre-Hysteria rocks, hard, especially High ‘n’ Dry.
No, I did not click your insidious link. I didn’t want to touch it, because the foul stench of Motley Crue and Mutt Lang-era Def Lepard was unctuously seeping off it – enough to make my Fender Strat turn pink and sprout a “B.C. Rich” label on the head stock.
But mainly because I’m lazy.
we’re supposed to click links?
I’m 100% for knocking “Mutt,” but I don’t think he became the studio over-tinkerer till Hysteria. That said, thank God AC/DC bid him adieu after For Those About to Rock…
To each their own, but what’s the beef with the Crue? Thought a blues guy like you would appreciate Mick Mars’ contributions to the band, even if his bluesy side didn’t start to rise to the surface till Theatre of Pain.

How about some Primus? They may not count as “pure” heavy metal, ala Metalica, Black Sabbath or Judas Priest, but damn if those Primus boys don’t have some fun.
They and Red Hot Chili Peppers are more funk inspired metal, but since the set included Rush, which many describe as Prog Rock, then I can toss a vote in for Primus. “My Name Is Mud” “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver” “Mr. Krinkle”
They certainly do qualify for a good week’s worth of WFT videos. Check out “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver”
Primus? Oh, absolutely!!! Little RHCP never hurts either.
