Alien Nation (1988)
Futuristic adventure of a human cop who is paired with an alien cop (Mandy Patinkin) to investigate the deadly secret of an underground “newcomer” society. Cast: James Caan, Mandy Patinkin, Terence Stamp, Kevyn Howard, Leslie Bevis. Director: Graham Baker. 6:00 PM EDT. Fox Movie Channel.
Cult classic (more than classic) that led to BH contributor Gary Graham’s major first regular job on the TV spinoff. Cop buddy film with a sci-fi twist. It wasn’t a critical darling by any stretch but I’ve always liked this one — probably because I like James Caan (and Mandy Patinkin for that matter.) One of a great 1980s stretch of cop buddy flicks from 48 Hours through Lethal Weapon, etc. I know there’s also commentary about immigration (coming off of the amnesty bill in 1986) and the War on Drugs — also at full tilt in the late 1980s. Great flick as in entertaining.
Over on TCM at 8:30 AM EDT is prior Pick The Third Man.

Anyone else notice how blatantly Floyd has been sucking up to Eric’s tastes ever since Porvaznik started his alternate pick posts?
Shhhhh. We’ll see who blinks first for Sunday’s pick.
You wish. Trying to keep movie posts to a minimum. Plus I am hardly highbrow.
You’re not fooling anyone. I have it on good authority you read books. And use utensils when you eat.
You are hardly highbrow … unless one considers the Thomas Cole paintings, the “classic movies,” and the Gospel stuff, as well as the books you push. And now I see you use utensils. But you’re only highbrow if you’re using those utensils to eat something like venison chops with a minotaur sauce.
It’s nice to see this flick get mentioned. Yes, it’s not the French Connection, but it’s a pretty entertaining cop/scifi show. Jimmy Caan has some wonderful lines.
“Your name’s Rudyard Kipling, huh? *chuckling* No shit.”
