Classic Pick O’ the Day: July 30

Manhunter (1986)
An FBI specialist tracks a serial killer who appears to select his victims at random. Cast: William Petersen, Brian Cox, Dennis Farina, Joan Allen, Stephen Lang, Tom Noonan. Directed by Michael Mann. 9:00 PM PDT. IFC.

I think Silence of the Lambs was a great movie and I think Anthony Hopkins deserved his acclaim for playing Hannibal Lecter. All that being said I still think this is the gold standard of Hannibal Lecter films and I prefer Brian Cox’s Hannibal to Hopkins. And I think William Petersen’s William Graham is a better protagonist than Jodie Foster’s Clarice Starling as I prefer struggling life-weary veteran characters over fearful, insecure newbies.

  • A fine movie based on one of Thomas Harris’ best novels, before he fell in love with his villain.

Woo! Good choice. One of all-time favorites.

I’m not sure about trying to compare Cox to Hopkins, however. They were both excellent, although I do think Cox presented a smoother Lecter than Hopkins’ more frenetic characterization.

Completely in agreement about William Peterson as Will Graham. Edward Norton as a emotionally scarred veteran FBI agent? Seriously?

  • Yeah, love both this and Silence, but this one just a little bit more. Dennis “F you F-ball” Farina, man!!!

This was a Michael Mann film correct?

Prefer Hopkins to Cox. The Graham character was just overall better from the novel but for the Sterling character Foster was excellent. This film trounces “Red Dragon” and “Hannibal”.
