Get Carter (1971)
A small-time gangster searches for the truth behind his brother’s death.
Cast: Michael Caine, Ian Hendry, Britt Ekland, John Osborne Dir: Mike Hodges C-112 mins, TV-14. 10:15 PM PDT. TCM.
The theme is revenge on TCM tomorrow night. This is a great movie and as much as I like Sylvester Stallone he really should have left well enough alone. Caine’s got this one down pat — brutal vengeance and the consequences attached to such single-mindedness. Also an awesome soundtrack by Roy Budd…
Prior CPOD Point Blank with Lee Marvin is on at 8:30 PM PDT.

A truly bad-ass lead performance. Hollywood movies are filled with tough-guy posers, but Caine is the real deal in this. He goes beyond anti-hero and into the realm of full-on villain.
Stallone was the right actor for the remake, but the filmmakers’ fatal mistake was softening up Jack Carter, which effectively turned it into just another revenge movie. What a wasted opportunity.
If you want to see a revenge flick with Michael Caine, you can’t beat Harry Brown…if you enjoyed Grand Torino, this will be up your alley.
Finally watching it tonight. Can not wait.
Great lineup tomorrow! I’ll be watching football and hoping for these movies to be repeated soon. Never seen “Get Carter” and honestly had no idea that Michael Caine did it first.
Oh and “Point Blank”…I remember when it was the CPOD somebody pointing out in the comment that it needs re-edited very, very badly. Great movie though and Lee Marvin is a tough hombre.
Ian Hendry, who is in this movie, was the original star of “The Avengers” television series. He played an idealistic doctor, uneasily partnered with a ruthless agent named John Steed. When Hendry left the series, thinking he had a brilliant movie career ahead of him, the producers first replaced him with another male doctor, then with various characters, and finally with Honor Blackman as Dr. Cathy Gale. She was succeeded by Diana Rigg as Mrs. Emma Peel, and the rest is history.
