Thomas Sowell, whose grace, common sense and intelligence has blessed conservative eyes and minds for years, takes on the Sarah Palin backlash and the roots of it all.
Perhaps the best way to try to understand these reactions is to recall what Eleanor Roosevelt said when she first saw Whittaker Chambers, who had accused Alger Hiss of being a spy for the Soviet Union. Upon seeing the slouching, overweight and disheveled Chambers, she said, “He’s not one of us.”
The trim, erect and impeccably dressed Alger Hiss, with his Ivy League and New Deal pedigree, clearly was “one of us.” As it turned out, he was also a liar and a spy for the Soviet Union. Not only did a jury decide that at the time, the opening of the secret files of the Soviet Union in its last days added more evidence of his guilt.
The Hiss-Chambers confrontation of more than half a century ago produced the same kind of visceral polarization that Governor Sarah Palin provokes today.

Yup, the USA most definitely needs more Sarahs.
Come on baby, eat the rich
Put the bite on that son of a bitch
I’ve always enjoyed Mr. Sowell. His books “The Vision of the Anointed” and “Quest For Cosmic Justice”changed my world, literally, as I transitioned from art skool Pacifica stooge to conservative Catholic. I have his “Basic Economics” on my book shelf and plan on reading it after I make my way through the stack of books on the bed stand.
I can’t recommend him highly enough. If he had 10 public conservatives like him with his command of history and economics the dialog would shift in this country.
Eric, I tip my hat to anyone who can quote Motorhead in a blog post about Tom Sowell.
Thanks. Sadly, can’t recall any Lemmy songs about eating the intelligentsia.
Dang Sid… Pacifica? Holy crapola. You drank the Kool-Aid and then threw it up. Welcome back brother.
Good stuff from Sowell. Talk about GIANT brain. And good call on the Motorhead Lyrics Eric.
Lol Floyd!
Yup, those were indeed the dark times. I remember waking up one morning, Valentine’s Day. I had Pacifica on my alarm clock radio. I awakened to Amy Goodman talking (more like droning on) about the slave workers in the flower industry and the small children imprisoned in chocolate factories. Yeah, these people definitely have a screw loose.
I guess the one thing that came out of that experience, along with reading Chomsky, was that I can smell a marxist in the woodpile, so to speak. I know the codes, the language. This comes in handy, especially now a days, in the age of the community organizer.
Amy Goodman… is there a more depressing person on TV today? The orwellian “Free Speech TV”…. uh. The poor woman oozes “joylessness”.
Oh yeah. Her message is “Why are you dancin’ when the world is burning?”
Oh wait…that is a song..
Eleanor Roosevelt…other than Lillian Hellman, the ugliest creature that ever lived
Mr. Sideous,
So you know their language?
Can you be Threedonia’s official Marxist-English translator?
I can be like June Cleaver, “Yes I speak Marxist.”
But I don’t look right in the heels and apron.
Just another nonsensical fan boy for Palin. She was stupid in high school and she’s stupid today. She has reached this point in life with her looks and her aw gee shucks persona that she can turn on and off at will.
The reason people are critical (not hate) of her is because she’s a self aggrandizing, manipulative, lying, political operative of the worst sort.
Hey we got ourselves another TROLL! Hey Emperor is that your stripper name?
Should we shoot this chimp,Stephanie?
Let me ask you something,asshole
Did you go to high school with Sarah Palin?
Self-contradiction. Baseless assertions. Broad-brush characterizations. Yup, that’s what I would call a troll.
Emperor must be a male exotic dancer who sidelines as a Barrista at a local counter culture coffee shop that smell of patuolie and incense.
David Marcoe,
“Self-contradiction. Baseless assertions. Broad-brush characterizations. Yup, that’s what I would call a troll.”
You forgot to add “no follow-up posts”
Libs are always implying, if not out-and-out telling us, that they take the high road, but they almost always resort to ad hominem attacks.
Since someone asked about Emperor: http://allalaskans.com/emperor/
I guess he just proved Thomas Sowell’s point.
