Thought of this last Friday night…94.9-FM’s “70s at Seven” was disco-focused, and I was groovin’.
Most people sing in their cars. I dance.
Let’s see what you’ve got for your dream five, never-fail-to-get-you-in-the-mood, up-on-your-feet, song list. Here’s mine:
5. September – Earth, Wind, & Fire. My favorite song from my favorite 70s group; possibly my favorite group of all time, or at least they’re tied. This song takes me back to my senior year. Which was, in fact, when this number hit the charts.
4. Disco Inferno – The Trammps. Burn, baby, burn! but in a good way.
3. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – Cyndi Lauper. Con-gaaaaaa!! I used to think of this as the story of my life. In my 20s. Then the Parents de Wank rolled into town this week, so I’ve been living the lyrics (“My father yells, ‘What you gonna do with your life ?’ “), so I have decided, it’s still the story of my life.
2. Word Up – Cameo. You can actually dance to this sitting down, if necessary. And I have! Whatever. Raising your hands in the air like you just don’t care is especially appropriate in this administration.
1. Boogie Shoes – KC & The Sunshine Band. One of the best dance numbers, ever. Ever. The ultimate Friday-after-five song.
1: Girls Just Want to Have Fun, because my brother Jim once showed up with the album and said this girl reminds me of you. Awesome tune.
2: Walk Like an Egyptian..yep the Bangles
3: We’re not gonna take it Twisted Sister
4: Rebel Yell Billy Idol
5: Walking on Sunshine (forget the band) reminds me of high school graduation.
ohhh… I love stuff like this! Can I only pick five? Maybe some honorable mentions?
1. Let My Love Open The Door by Pete Townsend (never fails-get up and dance and sing)
2. Gimme Three Steps by Lynyrd Skynyrd (this song has too many good memories with it)
3. No Rain by Blind Melon (I am dancing just THINKING about this tune)
4. What I like About You by the Romantics (and song you can dance and point to someone on the dancefloor in and get your message across is a winner in my book)
5. Love Shack by the B-52’s (I dare ya not to dance to this one-dare ya!)
Hon. Mentions:
*You Dropped the Bomb On Me by the Gap Band (my friends and I danced at a gas station one night when this came on the radio-it is that good!)
*No Parking on the Dancefloor by Midnight Starr (I call this “pimp rock”)
*I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ by Scissor Sisters (may be one of the best dance tunes ever-maybe)
*Single Ladies by Beyonce’ (that is right, I said it… but you know that you are dancing to it too!)
Ok good pick on Gimme Three Steps June. Awesome.
“Walking on Sunshine” was done by Katrina and the Waves
“The Four Seasons: Spring” By Vivaldi
“Waltz of the Sugarplum Fairy” by Tchaikovsky
“Ode to Joy” by Beethoven
“String Quartet 15 in d minor” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
“Blue Danube waltz” by Strauss
Outlaw nailed the name of the band that sang that song. I seem to remember driving home at 6am the morning after High School Graduation (We had a lock in party at the Y. Several kids got tossed for drinking) and that song was playing on the radio.
“Let My Love..” — great choice! There was a very very sweet moment in “Dan in Real Life” when Steve Carell sang that to Juilette Binoche.
“Walk Like an Egyptian” — another great choice. When I lived in Baghdad, we used to rework the lyrics into “Drive Like an Iraqi”. hee
Kit: These are your PARTY songs?
Wanks I was thinking the same thing…Kit you party like a Rock Star.
He’s George III.
1. Party Weekend by Joe King Carrasco
2. Brick House by The Commodores
3. Ice Cream Man by Van Halen
4. Heard It on the X/Tube Snake Boogie/La Grange by ZZ Top
5. Easy Livin’ — Uriah Heep
Easy Livin’
nice
Dispense first with AC/DC, the greatest single party band in my book:
Thunderstruck
Let There Be Rock
TNT – all that “oying” = adrenaline rush from hell
Shoot to Thrill
Whole Lotta Rosie – live version from If You Want Blood… — “Angus, Angus!!!!”
The others:
Replacements/I.O.U. – ornery in all the right places
Van Halen/Hot for Teacher – Alex’s drums rarely set a better mood
J.Geils Band/Land of 1,000 Dances – non-edited version from Showtime!
J.Geils Band/Looking for a Love – “Live Full House” version — best live band ever (educated guess)
Slobberbone/Haze of Drink – best cowpunk song ever and best live band ever (confirmed)
Hmmm, as milady just started doing the Jillian Michaels Shred workout, I think I’ll take the more enjoyable (and apparently easier) routine of listening to all the above before going to work. Lose 20 pounds in no time…
Wankette here: Eric you head-banging cutie!
Okay, without sneeking peeks at others’ work:
1. Who Do You Love – George Thorogood (or just about any other song with the “Bo Diddley beat.” Iko, Iko would work–anyone’s version)
2. Come On Eileen – Dexys Midnight Runners (If I can have the video playing I’d take Safety Dance by Men Without Hats)
3. Right Place, Wrong Time – Dr. John (time to get funky!)
4. Superstition – Stevie Wonder Wankette here: Only because it’s a far better choice.
5. Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees (and this is the second)
Now that I’ve peeked, I’ll take June’s songs instead.
“Since You’ve Been Gone” – Rainbow
“Blitzkrieg Bop” – The Ramones
“Don’t Bring Me Down” – Electric Light Orchestra
“Life’s What You Make It” – Talk Talk
“I Want Candy” – The Strangeloves (since someone mentioned the Bo Diddley beat, I’d include the original of this one)
Mike-it depends on how well you can dance.
I dance beautifully—under a strobe light. I’ve discovered that as long as I’ve changed position in between the flashes, no one knows what the hell is going on.
I’d like to petition Wankette to allow me to change my #4 from “I’m Your Boogie Man” to “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder, on the grounds that I don’t want to be ‘that disco guy.’
Band I was briefly in did a medley of “Who Do You Love” and “I Want Candy” — nice calls, Mike and JWH.
1. Jump, Jive, an’ Wail- Louis Prima
2. You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine – Lou Rawls
3. Lips Like Sugar – Echo & The Bunnymen
4. Rudie Can’t Fail – The Clash
5. New Sensation – INSX
a disco guy with a stetson? is it even possible?
I’m a complicated man.
Matt — Lou Rawls! He and Al Green could have a “smoooooth” contest. Lou would win, but it would be a great contest.
p.s. I have that on a 45 somewhere. *sigh*
One song that I could be dead three days and it would still make me dance: I Feel Good, James Brown
hmmmmm, gotta go with Walking on Sunshine, Katrina and the Waves for number 2
What I Like About You, The Romantics
In the Mood, Glenn Miller-just love to swing dance
All my Exes George Strait just because they mention the Frio River, it’s what I learned to two step to on the banks of said river under an oak tree in the starlight. A goat roper taught me, took me for a walk, and then removed his hat and asked for a kiss (oh,yeah, he got his kiss). Just perfect.
You all have pretty good taste though, I would dance with any of you.
Except maybe Kit….but I would like to take tea with you
And yes Eric, if I’m going with Denton Bands only, Slobberbone and some Brave Combo. Although Ten Hands, way way back in the day, was very fun at the FSF.
Ok, I’m done adding to my comments now. Good grief.
Wanks, since Sinatra already dubbed Rawls as having, “the smoothest chops in the business,” I think Al would just show up to be a good sport.
Why do I get the feeling I’ll never live this one down.
Or whatever the appropriate phrase is.
Ohh Louis Prima. My Mom in Law LOVES him. I love going to some hole in the wall Italian restaurant and hearing him on the music system. Buca di Bepo plays a lot of his stuff. Good food btw.
As in like awesome.
I really don’t think there is, has been, or ever will be, a person that has more rhythm than Louis Prima. If that man can’t get your toe tapping, then you’re dead.
Possibly my favorite Louis Prima number is his voiceover as King Louie in “Jungle Book”…”I Wanna Be Like You”.
Ever seen the film of them recording this? Now, THAT. Was a party.
I must see that.
Matt,
It may be locatable (word?) on YouTube; it’s on the Jungle Book DVD/extras.
Let me know what you think!
Found it. Awesome stuff. It shows how infectious the man was with his music.
Here, everybody:

You won’t Kit. You surprised us.
Here’s the video Wankette was talking about.

I also like Prima, a lot!, and I agree he does a great job with this song in the movie. I have an album with Los Lobos doing a cover. It’s a great take on the song and worth checking out, if you like the song.
Rufus, I think that Los Lobos cover is also on the Swingers soundtrack.
I love Swingers. What a great movie. Our Baby done growed up….heh.
Come on, Jillian! It’s never too late to join the fun!
