They Are Empty Vessels! I Didn’t Say Empty Your Vessels!!!!

Some Marines are in trouble for peeing on the dead bodies of some Taliban. I guess on some level I wish they hadn’t done that, but my “give a damn” just isn’t too worked about it. My main issue… why WHY did they videotape it? Good Lord that was breathtakingly dumb.

Top U.S. officials moved swiftly Thursday to try to prevent diplomatic damage and contain public disgust from the release of a video that appeared to show Marines urinating on three Afghan corpses — images that spread quickly around the globe.

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said he had viewed the video and considered it “utterly deplorable.” He telephoned Afghan President Hamid Karzai and pledged a full investigation.

Prior to the call, Karzai described the video as “completely inhumane and condemnable in the strongest possible terms.” His administration called on the U.S. military to “apply the most severe punishment to anyone found guilty in this crime.”

The video, which runs for less than a minute, depicts four Marines in combat gear laughing and joking as they urinate on three male bodies. The caption refers to the corpses as “dead Talibans,” but it is unclear whether the men were civilians or fighters killed after a battle.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton expressed “total dismay” at the behavior depicted in the recording, and said the “vast, vast” majority of American military personnel would not engage in such actions.

I’m not exactly sure how one “desecrates” a piece of shit — much less a dead POS, but whatever. I’m also somewhat amused by Hillary Clinton’s “total dismay”. Apparently it’s OK for some people to pee on live redneck wimmins trailer park trash, but not on dead enemies. Total dismay indeed.

Anyway… as I said… my dudgeon isn’t too high other than at these dolts for the lunacy of making a video record and then putting it on YouTube (or however they shared it) that will besmirch our efforts there and our soldiers, Marines, et al. still over there — that really is the unforgivable part of this whole episode.

Video at the link if you’re that curious.

I’m kind of on the side of the fence that hopes the guys who did this get their butts seriously kicked in some sort of disciplinary action for a few reasons.

    1. This is not really the behavior of a soldier. Yes, they are the enemy and yes we don’t like them, but really. We do have honor and the US soldier has traditionally held themselves to a higher standard. That’s one of the things that makes the US soldier better.

    2. It was just stupid. What exactly did they think they were going to accomplish by making the rest of the world think US soldiers are dicks? I’m sure this video is doing great things to help the relations between the US government and other Middle Easters governments.

    3. I’m guessing this is a direct violation of some sort of order, regulation, training, whatever. Those of you who have served might correct me if I’m wrong, but somewhere peeing on dead bodies is probably prohibited. I know that some rules in the military get broken in certain situation when the need presents itself, but I’m not seeing a “need” to pee on a dead body. It just wasn’t wise.

    4. People in America see this and it just adds more fuel to the fire that is the argument regarding America’s role militarily in the world. Soldiers are supposed to just do their jobs and do it well, not do bizarre things like this that just makes trouble.

I totally agree with the “don’t give a hoot” argument in regards to it being the Taliban being peed on. For me it’s more of the behavior of American troops. They could be peeing on Taliban, French, Canadian or a group of NY hookers for all I care and I would still be bothered by this.

    • By the way, quit calling them Soldiers, they are Marines. They want so badly to be regonized as such when they do good things they should also be acknowledged as such when they screw up royally.

I am kind of taken aback by the number of comments I have seen other places that have absolutely no issue with what these idiots did. If someone can’t understand why doing this and releasing a video of it isn’t a good idea, then you are putting about as much thought into it as the Marines who perpetrated the act did.

      • To be clear, I wasn’t trying to say it was a good thing or even a neutral act, just that the breathless outrage by our “moral betters” on the Left is fatiguing. In the scale of bad things our military men could do, this seems way down the list from Abu Ghraib. This will be dealt with like that was… these three plus the camera man (please God don’t let him be hailed as a “whistle blower”) will be punished as they should be while the New York Times, Karzai, et al. lecture us.

I know we are and should be better than our enemies and this serves no purpose (other than the bad image 3 have heaped on thousands). I’m also sure I should probably be more angered by these Marines.

Well they aren’t boy scouts and they tend to prove it. My give a damn working either but I am sure they violated orders so now they are in trouble and to the genius who videoed it? Moron is such a harmless word…

  • Not that it makes what these few individuals did right (it wasn’t), but one of the many glaring differences in what happens next is they’ll be disciplined, something which can’t be said of our barbaric enemies who love videotaping their beheadings for the world to see.

  • P.S. This is your military now, President Obama. Probably not as much fun having to deal with those calls from Code Pink demanding you be held accountable for this deplorable “war crime.”

What’s that, Code Pink and other lefties could care less? OK, as you were, America …

I understand why they did it, but our principles don’t have a “piece of shit” exemption clause. You don’t desecrate a body.

    • Mighty Skip

This. Although I understand exactly what JimmyC is saying below, our entire country, laws, society and culture are based on principles. They should not be tossed to the wind so easily, or else there is no United States of America.

Desecration of the dead is a war crime, isn’t it?

These guys were idiots. The same kind of mindless idiocy that caused Abu Graib. I can understand how it happened, but there is no excuse.

Turn it around. If those were dead Marines on the ground, and Taliban fighters pissing on them, what would you think? Well, that’s what the enemy is thinking of us now. That’s what a large part of the world is thinking of us now. They’re not thinking of those 4 individuals, they’re thinking of the United States.

If those were dead Marines, and the Taliban publicly punished the offenders, what would you think about the punishment? What would you think about a letter of reprimand in a personnel file? Or maybe a month’s confinement? Wouldn’t quite make up for the pain and offense you feel at the outrage, would it? The enemy isn’t going to care if these 4 guys get a slap on the wrist – the insult has been made, the pain inflicted, and all the nice words int he world aren’t going to make it better.

When someone in the Middle East, ANYONE, apologizes for hanging the burnt body parts of our contractors off of a bridge in Iraq, then maybe I’ll start giving a damn about this.

  • 67Cougar

Jimmy, I shudder when folks tell me we should turn the other cheek, that “we’re better than that”. Sometimes I just get pissed when folks say we should be held to a higher standard. Sometimes, you’ve got to get down to the level of the bad guys to fight them.

This, however, isn’t one of those times. Looking at the men in this video, this was done as a joke. They were pissing on the guys they apparently killed, laughing about it, and yucking it up for the camera. I am sure none of them ever expected the video to be made public, it was supposed to be private, shared amongst a few buddies. Well, guess what? Just like that sex tape that was supposed to remain private between two people, it is eventually going to get out to youtube.

To desecrate a body, even that of a mortal enemy, is just wrong. To do it for the sake of a few laughs is beyond stupid. When it comes to this, yes, we should be better than the bad guys.

It mainly makes me mad because there are good men and women in our military that are harmed every time crap like this gets around, either in the minds of people who are looking for excuses to think badly of our military, or by enemies over there.

Even if they don’t give a damn about being held to a higher standard, desecrating a body, or just being seen as an idiot, they *are* supposed to care about their fellows in uniform. It’s just a punk thing to do.

America has generally always taken the high road on things like this, but lately the society as a whole has gotten really very tacky and, well, left wing acting. We should be named for the good we do, and not the tawdry crap like this. Just because the Taliban beheads and hangs their victims from the bridges, doesn’t mean we have to take the low road and help convince the muslim world that we are as they say, the great satan. We really, really, need a good Christian revival in America, and put a stop to all this juvenile stuff in nearly all aspects of government, politics, military, and daily civilian life as a whole. Yes, I am preaching to the choir as well as to myself!
