  • Mrs.Make.Do.

    Good morning again, all!
I’ll short order breakfast in the kitchen – eggs, french toast (freedom toast?), bacon, coffee, oj – if we’ve got it on hand, I’ll serve it up for your order, like I used to do when I worked behind the counter at the Coolidge Inn in Custer State Park. OMG was *that* a long time ago.

    A little help, please?
I’d like to buy Mr.Make.Do some music for our anniversary tomorrow. Looking for something recent-ish.
    Any suggestions?
I was considering Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More, but since I haven’t heard it I’m not sure if the lyrics are the kind of “Thanks for putting up w/me for 18 yrs” or even just “Love you, honey” message I’m looking for.

    • Stacie… Mumford and Sons is great. One song has an F-bomb in it (the says he “F’d it up” and it’s in the chorus so it’s there a few times. It’s a great song nonetheless, but that could be a deal breaker for some). It has a lot of Christian themes in it — especially Sigh No More and Awake My Soul, but also has some “love gone difficult” songs too.

If he likes bluesy/garage rock then I highly suggest The Black Keys “El Camino”

Perhaps the message would be “Here’s some great music don’t read too much into the lyrics.” :-)

Thanks for the menu today, Mrs.Make.Do! Keep the O.J. flowing, please! :-)

I met Russ Taff at a bookstore back in ’88 when he was out promoting his then-current eponymous release. The two things I remember were that he was not as warm as most of the other CCM stars that I had met (though it was late in the signing, and he also appeared tired, so I chalked it up to being human), and he’s really short. But when he sings…he’s a giant. :-)

      • goozer… I think he was in the middle of his addiction at that point. He dual released that CD and another on a secular label. I was Manhattan in 1991 and heard a radio ad for a Rus Taff show at some blues bar there. I didn’t get a chance to make it, but I would have loved to hear Taff tear up some R&B at a blues bar.

Thanks for the coffee Stacy….anyone see what evil Michael Moore was spewing about conservative women on Twitter last night? Holy shit…..what a foul fetid putrid vomit inducing bag of fat he is.

Thank you very much Mrs. M.D.! Mucho apprecianado! I have more coffee and krullers…gotta go. I’ll be back.

“Sigh No More” is a good message song, but not in the vein of love and marriage necessarily. It’s more about a man’s relationship with God. I’ve got some weird tastes in music, so I’m not the one to ask. :-)

So, I’m chomping at the bit AND frothing at the mouth to play Mass Effect 3, which is already preloaded for people who bought/downloaded digital copies, but is waiting to be activated for the release date of March 6th. Some of the spoiler-free preview videos on IGN have just increased my anticipation. It looks %$#@& awesome and a major improvement over Mass Effect 2.

I never have understood the attraction to the Mass Effect games. They seemed so dull and predictable to me. But then again, I’ve never been a massive fan of the first person genre anyway.

My comment is awaiting moderation. To invoke Fritz: AAARRRGGGHHHH!

    ED: Not no mo’.

Double kudos squared to Mr. Duvall – it’s tough enough to make a quality movie with commercial appeal that involves both sympathetic yet complex characters and religious themes that don’t degenerate into maudlin drivel – but to do it twice (“The Apostle” and “Tender Mercies”) – that’s amazing.

Duvall made a good movie there. We watched it for the first time a few weeks ago! If you want to see him in another movie he made, watch Assassination Tango. It’s kind of different for him, but good as well.

    • I watched “The Apostle” some time ago at Floyd’s suggestion. Duvall was brilliant. It’s worth seeing again.

      • Glad you liked it INFJ!

I’m curious… I think (correct me if I’m wrong) that you said you were sort of a mystic Catholic (along the lines of Thomas a Kempis? — I’m coming from ignorance on all the various movements within Catholicism so forgive me :-) ). What did you think of the Pentecostalism portrayed in the film (quite accurately I might add — Duvall did his homework)

        • As an occasional participant in the Catholic Charismatic movement, I enjoy the enthusiasm of Pentecostals, I call them God’s cheerleaders. Floyd, the term,”mystic Catholic” sounds like something weird and occult. I am simply a Catholic who has Studied the works of Theresa of Avila and John of the Cross who are two of the many Catholic “Mystics” who have explained in their own way (by analogy), the levels of prayer. The deepest level of prayer being wordless is loosely akin to Zen meditation. The oldest book I know of that teaches this is “The Cloud off Unknowing” which was written by a Catholic Monk in, I believe, the thirteenth century.

I received Spiritual direction from a wonderful Bernardine Nun for about five years, and I have a post graduate certificate for Spiritual direction from my Diocese. So you can see I am a mainline Catholic – nothing strange, :)

And happy # 62 to Rick Perry!

So it seems a bunch of advertisers have pulled their support from Rush’s show. I can’t imagine it’ll do much harm to the show simply because I have to imagine there’s a pretty long line of advertisers waiting to get on his show. It will, I would think, hurt the business because Limbaugh has a pretty wide and dedicated audience. I know I personally won’t go out of my way to NOT buy their products. I kind of think it’s nice that the companies were at least willing to stick to principles, whatever they may be.
