Mornin’ all y’all. Breakfast buffet is set up with: bacon, scrambled eggs, grits, home fries and shortbread for desert. Coffee by Costco, “rich and dark”. Y’all help yourselves. Take a break today, fritz.
Thanks for the breakfast and the break. much appreciated. I was actually here over two hours ago, but no Open Thread yet, so I drank my coffee alone…sniff…sniff! Poor me! (Extends lower lip!)
White killing black is a hate crime and a civil rights violation. Black killing white is a blurb on the backpage of the USA Daily Buttwipe, not worthy of mention!
I’m curious about something in that story. They said he shot them with a .22 revolver but they found shell casings. Revolvers don’t eject casings on their own. Was the guy really so stupid as to fire then empty the gun leaving his brass there?
The story wasn’t written very clearly, but I think the implication was that a friend of the accused led police to where he had buried the casings–not necessarily anywhere near the crime scene.
From what I’ve read about Leni, she was a great photographer but as a filmmaker, I’m not so sure. Yes, she could edit her images to create powerful scenes but a filmmaker is more than a photographer and editor, a filmmaker is a storyteller. And a story teller tells stories of individual human experience.
From what I’ve read of her fiction films (need to see them) they were modern run-of-the-mill romantic, Rousseauean silliness.
Also, on the ACT OF VALOR/TRIUMPH OF THE WILL tweet. Let’s go with the idea that the Navy SEALs are on the same moral par with the Waffen-SS or Einsatzgruppen. Let’s go with that for a second. Let’s assume that the Navy SEALs depicted in the film are as evil and morally degenerate as the SS Death Squads that terrorized Europe.
Even then, Act of Valor is still better. Triumph of the Will may be better shot, filmed, and edited than VALOR but Valor has something that Triumph lacks.
A love of humanity.
TRIUMPH there is no “real” humanity outside of Hitler. Outside of him there is nothing but the sub-human, if that. We exist for Hitler and his Germany, nothing else. It is utterly nihilistic.
In VALOR, however, everyone is given humanity. The Navy SEAL, the pregnant mom, the informant, even the terrorist, is given some level of humanity. We know the villain, and this is VERY important, is a human being. Even the villain is given humanity. Valor is the opposite of Nihilist.
I know very little about her, except that she was pro Nazi. That a soulless creature like Hitler loved Beethoven and Wagner does not lessen the beauty of the music. I enjoyed the music and the photography. Thank you, Kit.
It says that if the police enter a home without IDing themselves and the resident, thinking he is being invading illegally, shoots back, then the homeowner is not considered criminally liable.
If that’s it, then the homeowner ought to be off the hook. Too much unannounced heavy handedness going on these days. Too many “elected” DAs also going for the jugular without proper investigations as well. We had a case here some years back, though, not the same type case, where a guy was attacked in his home and chased the two guntoting perps out the front door and killed one before he got to the sidewalk. He then chased the other one for three blocks before he blew the second one away. He would have got off scott free here, except the second one was a tad far from the guys property. They gave him 10 years for manslaughter. He’s been out now for nearly that long, having served only 3 years I believe.
I figure if someone is illegally entering my home, and I feel threatened, it doesn’t matter who they are. Get a warrant, ID yourself, and obey the law and you shouldn’t have to worry about people resisting.
If there were a “Threedonia Mobster Film Festival”,what films would you include? Some less obvious choices than “The Godfather” or “Scarface” perhaps…I would include this one, which I think Matt knows: http://www.criterion.com/films/1426-the-friends-of-eddie-coyle
Is “Prizzi’s Honor” and “The Untouchables” too obvious? Yesterday, I was just thinking I needed to watch “A Bronx Tale” again; and even though it is more lighthearted, I enjoy “Married to the Mob” as well.
Yesterday, Outlaw mentioned the name of the game show, Takeshi’s Castle, that Wipeout was copied from. The host of that show was Takeshi Kitano who’s a bad ass actor. So I’d also show his yakuza flicks, Brother (which was filmed in America and is in English), and the latest, Outrage (on Netflix streaming). And speaking of yakuza, I’d also show the Robert Mitchum movie, Yakuza.
Good movie. I wrote a published article on how Kung Fu Hustle, and other movies like, Hero, were basically raped by Miramax. They bought the American rights to those movies, but they went ahead and changed the soundtrack scores, re-edited them, or promised vast viewings to garner a foreign Academy award nomination. Hero was shown on a few screens in Hollywood for a couple of days to make it eligible for the Golden Globe awards. There was an online petition at the time, to get the academy to notice Hero. Out of the blue, Hero became a nominee for an Oscar that year, although it didn’t follow the rules for being a movie that played at the cinemas for a consecutive timeframe.
The bluebonnets are in full bloom here in Tejas and this apparently makes some people loose their ever lovin’ minds. Folks, find someplace other than the side of a busy freeway to take pictures of your loved one sitting in the flowers…jeeze where’s a cop when you need one. 5 cars parked on the side of the freeway, with their kids running around in the flowers just off the road.
Very funny, Floyd. Actually I don’t care if they want to take pictures, but it’s crazy to do it on I-635 or the George Bush Expressway…but the call of the bluebonnets is too much for them to take, apparently.

Obviously no one cares that I had to drink my coffee alone this morning! (extending lower lip even further!)
I was thinking of you, Herr Kommandant, as I was cleaning the latrines, which, by now, are spotless. Have you inspected them, yet?
Used, yes. Inspected no.
Bringing my own coffee and how’s this for the lighter fare: mushroom and egg white scramble and whole wheat toast….nummy
Excellent spread, INFJ! I know it’s rude to talk with your mouth full, but thanks!
I heard you, Goozer, you’re welcome.
Sounds delish, thanks INFJ!
Wish I would have arrived sooner!
Rock Chalk Jayhawk! By the way,I want Kentucky to win today so they can lose to Louisville.
Was this a civil rights violation?

Wacist!
Nope…just a realist!
They’re the same thing, as far as the racebaiters are concerned.
True that!
wealist…

I’ve heard there are some irregularities with the investigation. Not sure of the source so I won’t expound.
detectives just need more bran muffins.
See what I did there?

Some more great Vangelis music, st to the prologue from Leni Reifenstahl’s OLYMPIA.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6-0Cz73wwQ
Absolutely beautiful!
I think Vangelis is immensely talented and was glad to see today’s soundtrack here (and the link too, Kit!).
Here’s one I came across, it’s from “Alexander” – but don’t let that put you off – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VUCPnP-hpU&feature=related When I first heard it – I couldn’t tell it was Vangelis.

My favorite Olympic moment…Stockholm,1912.The King of Sweden tells Jim Thorpe he is the “greatest athlete in the world”.Thorpe’s reply? “Thanks,King”.
Of course, then the Olympics Committee screwed over Jim Thorpe
Did they ever.
They claimed that the medals must be taken from him because “Rules are rules”.
Fair enough -except by enforcing the rule several months AFTER the DEADLINE for enforcing them they were violating their own.
Pity he never lived to see the medals restored.
What does everyone think of this new law in Indiana?

Robert De Niro in Goodfellas.
You mean “The Codfather?”
Kill the Irishman
Eastern Promises
State of Grace
Boondock Saints
Eastern Promises definitely swings!

“Prizzi’s Honor”…very good!
Could use a Bronx Tale re-visit myself, and never a bad time for Married to the Mob. “I want a di-voooorce!!!”
I keep meaning to crack that book, Scott. Might do it today.
I’m going to go with a triad movie from Hong Kong, The Mission.
Yesterday, Outlaw mentioned the name of the game show, Takeshi’s Castle, that Wipeout was copied from. The host of that show was Takeshi Kitano who’s a bad ass actor. Donnie Brasco
Infernal Affairs (or its remake, The Depahhh-ted)
There needs to be a separate Threedonia Hong Kong Mobster Film Festival … or we could call it the, Give Me Face! Film Festival.
Kung Fu Hustle!
Different genre.
It has mobsters in Hong Kong.
Good movie. I wrote a published article on how Kung Fu Hustle, and other movies like, Hero, were basically raped by Miramax. I did enjoy Kung Fu Hustle quite a bit.

I loved Chariots of Fire.
I wish the lectors in my Parish could read like that.
Yeah, but your lectors probably don’t have the background music and dramatic cut-aways.
Well, dramatic cut-aways no, but I’m thinking maybe I could convince my Pastor to let me stand in back and hum.
Watching Charles Nelson Reilly’s autobiographical one man-play “Life of Reilly” om Netflix Streaming… very good and funny.
The bluebonnets are in full bloom here in Tejas and this apparently makes some people loose their ever lovin’ minds. Exactly! All the rubberneckers in the world have to slow down and cause wrecks, just trying to see what’s going on.
Very funny, Floyd.
Actually I don’t care if they want to take pictures, but it’s crazy to do it on I-635 or the George Bush Expressway…but the call of the bluebonnets is too much for them to take, apparently.
There’s never a flamethrower handy when you need one…
Oh Floyd, I would looooove to show this to my students right before an exam.
ROCK CHALK BABY!!!!
Yup yup!
Go home crying again Benedict Williams!
Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
Benedict Calipari too!
