Despite saying nice things about my expertise, I know what you’re doing Rufus. You’re calling me out on my views on popular music. And throwing Rockpile, one of my favs, into the mix was a dirty trick.
I think you’re analysis of pop music over the week has been right on. But some of those examples just don’t cut it.
Mostly you’re missing that pop music has to be popular — by definition. I’ personally have never heard of that The Records song. And as much as I’d like to hear Rockpile do Girls Talk over and over ( I still wear a jacket like Nick’s in that video, only mine is corduroy), it doesn’t cut it as pop music because, well, it isn’t popular and never was.
By the way, here’s some pop music by Rockpile — and you’ve likely even heard of it.

There’s an easy way to settle this, if you just realize you’re both wrong…
Never!
Seriously…what’s with all jibber jabber about music nobody cares about anymore? Old people….
JM: It’s as easy as this. Old people care about themselves. And we’re old so we care about this music too, ’cause WE like it.
Fair enough. It really isn’t so much the age of the music as it is the particular time periods and styles. And the popular part (as has been stated.)
That and you guys are all crazy.
