Another source of classic (and classical) music — Warner Brothers Looney Tunes cartoons. Great stuff in the above and the two other volumes for sale of the Carl Stallings Project.
The greatest song — Raymond Scott’s “Powerhouse” as conducted by Carl Stallings:
And Raymond Scott Quintet’s version — awesome:
Coffee … with coffee in it … coffee ketchup for your ham and eggs … coffee pickles (they way outsell the dill) … and crullers ’cause dunkin’ doesn’t take a lot of skill. And lastly … First!
Ketchup is one of the culinary wonders of the world…but on eggs? My old man used to do that.Ugh.
In redneck territory they put pepper sauce on their eggs!
Tabasco…I couldn’t remember what it was called. That’s what a lot of people put on eggs!
I prefer “Frank’s Hot Sauce.” Tabasco just doesn’t do it, for me.
Myself included.
I put Tabasco on my eggs to Fritzie…yes I am a Red Neck Woman! Thanks for the coffee!
Redneck women! All men should be so fortunate as to have a redneck woman!
Coffee pickles? I’m a dill/kosher fan; but, I’d try one.
Currently on my first well-medicated up o’ joe – aaaaaaahhh!
Ketchup goes on the hash browns/home fries. Hot sauce goes on the eggs, though if a little ketchup lands on my eggs (despite my fastidious efforts), it does taste . . .um . . .”acceptable.”
Oh,not again…

Whaddya s’pose they’ll do, come Dec. 22?
We have a doomsday cult here in the U.S., too. It’s called the global warming movement.
Democrats I think they call them,Jimmy.
Speaking of apocalypse. Have any of yall had an uptick in Jehovah’s Witnesses in your neighborhoods? I don’t think I’ve spoken to them in 20 years and I’ve had three conversations at my door this month. Curious.
Shooed away a couple of Mormons, last week. No JWs, though.
Yeah, one came to me last weekend. First I’d had in a while.
They’ve identified you as their next Supreme Leader.
Live long and Prosper,Floyd!

Seen a few young Mormon men but no JWS.
A guy showed up at my door the other day preaching some bizarre new-agey feminist Christianity that was all about how God was a woman. He “proved” it by showing me a bunch of underlined Bible passages that referred to God in a semi-feminine way. I argued that there are plenty of Bible passages suggesting the opposite, but that was moot since God is all-powerful and omnipresent, and therefore (presumably) transcends gender anyway. He was very adamant, though, that anyone who doesn’t accept that God is a woman (even other Christians) are going to hell.
I try to be patient with the door-to-door Bible thumpers, because I know they mean well (and I realize that from their point of view, they’re doing me a favor by trying to save me). But at some point I just have to say to them, “You’ve said your peace, now you can either leave politely or I can slam my door in your face. Pick one.”
My dad used to enjoy them. He’s a preacher who can out talk a woman, so he’d invite them in and just start talking and wouldn’t stop until they tried to leave. Every thumper who came to our door got the good ‘ol gospel message preached to them.
Yes…they hit our house late last week.
JWs I mean.
Looks as if Ohio’s community organizers have been out in force: http://z6.co.uk/20w
This sucks. I remember when Ohio was a conservative state.

I wonder if the Hispanic community will stand up for Mr. Zimmerman, in the same manner as Obama’s uninformed constituency. That would be a site to see, yes? The media would melt down, not knowing which side to favor and which to curse.
And, now, the other shoe begins to fall: http://z6.co.uk/20x
Zimmerman’s attorney makes a quick exit before allowing an interview with Lawrence O’Donnell.
The Hispanics in Memphis used to fall prey to the Hoodies until a few of them bought firearms…heh.
Could be the same problem here, though I still wish they’d take to the streets and demand justice for their guy.
Until it quits being “their” guy against “our” guy etc. we’re ALL going to be in a world of hurt.
I had a belly full of this crap when I was in high school, think we could have gotten beyond all this by now.
Smartest thing I’ve heard about this yet, Outlaw.
The trouble is, Outlaw, that nearly all lefties have never gotten past the age of 16 mentally. They’re trapped in a continuum and rebellion against authority and any sign of accountability to anyone, is totally foreign to them. Therefore they are not able to be fully functional citizens in a society of mature, thinking adults!
To be clear, I was referring to race based conflict (actual fights and pseudo riots), that I witnessed courtesy of a federal judge (forced busing/integration) and the immature minds of teenagers in my junior high and high school years, not cliquish behavior (us Vs. them). There WAS plenty of that as well.
I’d forgotten about the integration/forced busing issues. that came after my schooling. When I graduated HSW the race riots were starting up and the marches on Selma, Alabama, etc.
I’ve got more coffee…and PIG! I’ll be back! getting the oil changed, so a bit later than usual. Suffer, pilgrims!
The Sgt. Major will be in charge till I return!

Floyd, you can pretty much guarantee that when “Powerhouse” starts playing in a Warner’s cartoon, good things are about to happen.
That is for sure Outlaw.
OK…I am obviously spending
too mucha lot of quality time on this site — I was watching the Raymond Scott “Powerhouse” video just the other day!Okay I cannot link to this from here due to the filters on my office computer but apparently there is a video of Alicia Silverstone on YouTube chewing her baby’s food and spitting it into the child’s mouth, like a bird. WTF?? This video must be posted.
Here ya go…
Share away with the lunacy.
Jinx, Outlaw — buy ya a
CokeDr. Pepper.Thank you gentlemen. This whole thing makes me want to dry heave a bit. Is she mentally ill?
Uh, yes. Yes I’d say so.
She’s clueless.
+1995
Yeah…I’ll be keeping this video in mind the next time she uses her fame to lecture the rest of us on our health choices.
Don’t think she spit it into their mouths, but my sister-in-law did chew up their food for my niece and nephews in their younger years. I, however, apparently have no idea how to raise children because I believe in using the word “no” in the disciplinary process. Definitely a word I’d use in this chewing scenario.
Just remember Eric…men do not/can not breastfeed their children!
Great, one of Floyd’s favorite pics will now rise all Krakken-like.
I was worried about that prospect when I hit “comment” but ran with it anyway.
Yeah Eric, I’ve observed this quite a bit with a whole range of mothers. My own mother would help my baby sister chew things sometimes. My two younger brothers never really seemed to need help, they just kind of sucked everything in like a vacuum cleaner from hell. They’re 15 now and still haven’t stopped.
Now, I have only observed with with very young children, not children as old as the one in this video. That’s kind of strange.
There’s this new invention, it’s called a BLENDER! Please go buy one so I can stop seeing these hurl-inducing videos on Youtube!
Only two of my students have ever heard of Martin Scorsese. And only one knew that the NCAA tournament is going on, and what that means.
“Most informed generation”, my butt.
Something I used to do with young Soldiers in the unit was ask them if they knew who Audie Murphy was…unfortunately not many knew.
Ignorant… and proudly so — they are Generation 44!
I need to claw my way back to not being bothered. Because, you know, they’re not, so why should I care more than they do?
Though I DID give them the following assignment: Write about something that happened before you were born.
HAH! You Owe me a new cell phone screen!
Fingers crossed you don’t get something along the lines of, “My Parents Decided Not to Use a Condom.”
+1993
“Most informed” also means these kids have so much information coming at them, they often fail to process any of it. And more to the point, they tend to miss the forest for the trees.
If you want to have an in-class movie day, I’d be happy to lend you my DVD of Goodfellas.
You guys…always thinking of the Happy.
Eh, it’s Easter season. Throw Last Temptation of Christ at ‘em.
Still twitching from the Scorsese ignorance. Twitch-twitch …
He’s not even one of my favorites! but how do you live in the world with your ears & eyes open, and not know this shit?
You’re judging them by your outdated, Western, Industrial, Colonial standards. They are geniuses! (Just ask their mothers…)
I had to Google Martin Scorcese, Wank. After reading about him, I’m not sure why it is I should know who he is? He’s just an actor and a Hollywood-ite. I’ve never considered actors, actresses, musicians, and the link to really be all that important to my own life. I don’t watch TV, don’t generally care much about movies, and couldn’t list more than 3 or 4 popular singers right now that I listen to. For some people I suppose it’s a big deal, but it’s not like Martin Scorcese is Einstein, Eisenhower, or MLK Jr. I wouldn’t expect anyone 20 years from now to know who Tom Cruise was either. If they do it means movies are their thing, if they don’t know it just means they aren’t into movies that much.
I do know who Audie Murphy is but that’s because I enjoyed reading about WW2 as a kid and my grandpa told me about a time he met the guy and has a photograph of them together. But again, I wouldn’t expect kids today to know who he was unless they enjoy history, his is a very brief moment (important indeed) during a much larger conflict that is only covered in generalities as part of a US history class.
The reason I mention Audie Murphy is the fact that he is the most decorated Soldier in the history of the United States. His story could easily be the jumping off point to many lessons…but I mentioned his name to Soldiers because I think they need to know about the heroes who served before them and all that entails.
Oh I totally agree that every soldier should know who he is if for anything than as an example to follow. I also wish schools taught better history lessons.
He’s acted, but he is mostly known for being one of the pre-eminent directors of modern American cinema: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Aviator, The Departed, and most recently, a film many of them had seen, Hugo.
You misunderstand me. It’s not that they’d never heard of Scorsese that set me off. It’s that they’ve never heard of anything, and they don’t care. I don’t expect all of them to know everything, or movie trivia, or obscure dates, or who won the Super Bowl this year. I didn’t even expect MOST of them to know who he is. But for no one in that age range of 17 to 40 to be aware of current events, famous Americans…anything that doesn’t involve something that’s an ap or a text, reveals a depth and breadth of ignorance, and indifference to that ignorance, that makes it very hard to walk through a classroom door at all.
Bet they know who Snookie is.
As much as I hate thinking, “Screw having ‘em watch any Marty,” pop in Idiocracy as a “Scared stupid straight” lesson.
Now off to watch his “Life Lessons” segment from New York Stories.
I agree Wankette. I am always disturbed when I meet someone who is incurious, even more disturbed by folks who embrace their ignorance and are proud of it. It’s almost like their goal is to go through life and have nothing “stick.” It is truly disturbing. Maybe psychotic. I would be interested to know what motivation causes a mind to think that way. Is it pure, self-interest? If it’s not about them or what is immediately around them at any given moment it is not important? Maybe they have the honeybadger gene.
To piggyback on Outlaw’s example; an adult volunteers to be a part of an organization, the Army. He asks to join and goes through a battery of tests in order to be accepted. If you choose to be a part of a group, and request that group to accept you into their ranks, wouldn’t you care enough to know basic information about that group?
Your example is disconcerting. I’m not big into movies but I’m sure when I was in College I would have recognized every major film director from 30 years prior on an exam. It’s simply osmosis. Living in the U.S. the information was around me and I paid attention and it sunk in. Now, in Dr. Schplatt’s case; he was raised by missionaries in a rural area… I can understand how some folks are simply not exposed to some things due to their surroundings, but to be exposed and not notice?
I know those “Jay Walking” segments on the “Tonight Show” are supposed to be funny but I am genuinely saddened by them. The ignorance of apparently random people is depressing. I saw one where he was at a University commencement ceremony and many of the new graduates did not know how many moons the Earth has, or what the name of Earth’s moon is! A University should be ashamed to graduate students that ignorant and the graduates should be immensely embarassed. But nope, everybody just laughs!
Let’s be clear; there are thousands in our military who know all matter of information about military history, our nation’s history, current events and any other category one might care about, just as our Universities graduate thousands of students who are very well educated. But we are two nations; those who care and those who are apathetic. I sense growing frustration from those in the former group having to prop up those in the latter.
I would be ashamed if it was my fault. Curiosity is instilled at a young age. 18 is usually too late.
I don’t know the neuroscience of it, but my guess would be curiosity is innate and incuriosity has to be instilled.
Happy 70th birthday to my Dad- a Vietnam veteran, (retired) small business owner, Tea Party member and Harley-Davidson rider.
Also happy birthday to Vince Vaughn, one of the good guys in Hollywood.

Happy Birthday, Mr. C! Added thanks for your service and being a Hog rider!

Spike Lee, you sir, are an ass.

Floyd, as our resident lawyer here, can the couple sue Spike Lee?
yes — if they are getting harassed, threatened, etc. The first question in any civil suit — “What’s your damages?” No harm — no suit.
Could there not be criminal charges against Lee, especially if the info he tweeted causes bodily harm to Zimmerman?
The bucket-head tweeted the wrong address -fritz-.
Well, then whomever may end up hurt in that case.
Yes… reckless endangerment perhaps if they get attacked or vandalized, etc.

As perfect as our wedding was I just realized it would have been more perfecter if the soon to be Mrs. Firefly had walked down the aisle to “Powerhouse.”
That’s good Rufus. If I had to have walked down the aisle at my wedding, it would have been Steve Martin’s “Walk Like an Egyptian!”
STOPPING -FRITZPEAT!!
It wouldn’t count anyway since it’s all on one post. I’m just playing catch up since I was gone all morning.
You are technically correct. I should have called it, “Fritzageddon.”
So, if my name was Armand, it would have been Armandgeddon?

Steve Martin didn’t do “Walk Like an Egyptian” he did “King Tut”. The Bangles did “Walk Like an Egyptian.”
A friend of mind walked down the isle to Ozzy’s “Crazy Train”.
Weird, I thought it was Adam Ant who did “Crazy Train.”
No. He did “Goody Nu Shooz “
Crap! I knew when I typed it it didn’t sound right.
Hilarious!
Here’s what you shoulda’ done it to, -fritz-…
That would work. That is one funny piece of music! Everytime it was on the radio some years back, I almost drove off the road I was laughing so hard.
Yo, BarryO, looks like you’re in bolshoi xorosho company — Pravda endorses President Obama in 2012.

An ode to Dr. Pepper: http://hotair.com/archives/2012/03/28/joe-biden-thank-you-dr-pepper/
Knowing Biden, he probably thought he was talking about an actual doctor.
Maybe he was thinking of this… http://us.123rf.com/400wm/400/400/grazvydas/grazvydas1106/grazvydas110600065/9857061-red-pepper-and-stethoscope-over-a-white-background.jpg
It was an actual doctor whose name he mispronounced as Dr Pepper.
Okay, so my mouth outran my brain a little bit there. Fortunately, it’s the first time that’s ever happened to me.
