Deliverance 1972
Intent on seeing the Cahulawassee River before it’s turned into one huge lake, outdoor fanatic Lewis Medlock takes his friends on a river-rafting trip they’ll never forget into the dangerous American back-country.
Director: John Boorman. Cast: Burt Reynolds, Jon Voigt, Ned Beatty, Ronny Cox. TV-MA. 10:05 PM EDT. Sundance Channel.
If you’ve never seen this infamous movie tomorrow’s your chance. Watching tip… when you see Ned Beatty in his underwear… close your eyes. When you hear piggy sounds count to 7 and then you can watch again. Deliverance is sometimes criticized as being anti-South which has always struck me funny seeing as how the protagonists are all Atlanta businessmen. I don’t even think it tries to or does draw generalizations about all hillbillies. Take the movie for what it is — four city dudes trying to survive a hellish wilderness experience and it is a terrifying and suspenseful movie — some of Burt Reynolds’ best work. Also on Sundance is prior CPOD — Werner Herzog’s fascinating documentary Grizzly Man (8:45 AM, 4:15 PM).
Also… tomorrow on TCM, Myrna Loy is the Star of the Day.
On IFC tomorrow, prior CPOD Full Metal Jacket is on at 8:00 PM EDT.

Back in the day when the flick was making its first rounds, a close friend of mine invited a young lady to see this very flick. She married him.
As a teenager I went and saw a midnight showing of A Clockwork Orange. Not only were there couples in the theater, but they were actually cuddling. Whatever does it for ya, I guess…
Must have had some sort of effect. They went on to have a large family, which by today’s standards, we might refer to as a “clan” or a “tribe.”
What did Jeff Foxworthy say?”Made in Georgia…with Georgians!”
One of the greatest movies ever made!
There are two feed stores in my area that I get feed and hay from. My girlfriend and I nicknamed one of them, “The Deliverance Place,” because of the people who own it. I’ll let your imaginations stew on that.
Back at the last house I lived in – I used to say we didn’t have “the neighbors form hell” – we had “the neighbors from ‘Deliverance.’” Yes – the guy was belligerent, missing teeth and living in a single-wide with about 3-4 cars in various condition of disrepair out front.
