In His Head

It’s worth your time to listen to this again — or watch it the first time. Now I don’t think Romney’s plan for Medicare is exactly the same as Paul Ryans in specifics, but it largely mirrors it in principle. One of the best parts of the Ryan VEEP pick though is the other guy in the room. Look at Obama’s face. He HATES Ryan. They’ve already said outrageous stuff about the GOP. This will drive them even crazier. Usually driving right into the face of Mediscare is political suicide. Well… I think the national rhetoric is going to come unhinged even more and that it will ultimately help our case for November. In Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney didn’t just pick a smart, handsome, able politician. He picked someone for whom Obama has a deep visceral hatred — someone who dared tell him — to his face — that his “plan” was flawed, dishonest, and bad for America in the short and long run.

  • This was an awesome take-down and and exposure of a man so far out of his league that he shouldn’t even have been at that table, much less pretending to be President.

I linked to these two opinion pieces (here and here) late yesterday on the open thread, so I’m guessing most people didn’t see them, but I worry that what the author says is true, though I also see a number of fallacies in his analysis, as thoughtful as it is. Essentially, what the arguments boil down to in both posts is that if Romney chose Ryan to force a an “abstract argument” over the long-term future of entitlements, he’s disconnected from the average voter who is just trying to make ends meet and is wondering what both sides plan to do about the economic problems we have now.

    • I read those late last night…. Ryan doesn’t argue in the abstract. He clearly argues for keeping it now for those 55 and over and then goes abstract for those younger than 55.

I think the blogger confused “complex” with “abstract”. Ryan’s a gamble — getting people who are genuinely smart always is.

I also think he over emphasizes the “make ends meet” thing. This isn’t The Great Depression with no TV news and a lead-pipe lock on info from newspapers and radio. People today can and do multi-task for information on these Intertubes. He also forgets that while unemployment is 9% (oh hell let’s just say 15%) — that means 85% of workers have jobs and while they may be afraid of nervous about keeping those jobs, they do have those jobs and are making ends meet by and large — and we’re all getting older of course.

I think his concerns are valid, but overstated about Ryan. Ryan’s challenge will be to offset the dying old people that Dems will throw at him. I think people — except for hard core Dems — are seeing through that crap (witness the pushback against cries of racism, sexism, etc. — that is encouraging).

I saw a poll, I believe it was Gallup or Rasmussen that Seniors like Ryans plan. The fear mongering on the left will do them no good this time. Watching them flail has been fun.
Also the trollage has been less, I have not seen any here at all unless they are getting caught in the filter. There seems to be no real oomph on the dem side at all. I await the fire in the belly gang to show up…but…crickets.

If Romney wins, picking Ryan pays dividends. Creating a clear choice like this potentially increases the margin of victory, victory itself becomes a mandate, and a possible coattail effect may pick up more seats in Congress. All of that means more leverage and overhead for repealing O-care and Frank-Dodd.

Looking at Obama’s face in the video, and stealing a quote from the Queen, and our own beloved Rufus T. Firefly, “We are not amused!”

Good for Ryan…and us. At last, someone with intelligence and the will to use it for good, not evil!

Ryan has a degree in Economics; that alone makes him a great VP pick when the economy is THE issue, put up against how bad Obama has trashed it. The fact that we have two dudes who understand the economy and business, is going to sweep up the votes.
